Indian Navy online recruitment for Sailors for Senior Secondary Recruits Febroary 2018

The Indian Navy invites applications from unmarried male candidates to be enrolled as sailors for Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR) in the February 2018 batch.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Educational Qualification: You should have passed 10+2 exam or an equivalent exam with Mathematics and Physics and at least one of these subjects: Chemistry/Biology/Computer science.

  2. Age criteria: You should have been born between 1st February 1997 to 31st January 2001 (both dates inclusive).

  3. General skills: It is desirable to have proficiency in swimming, sports and extra-curricular activities.

  4. Physical standards and health criteria: You should have a minimum height of 157cms, with proportionate weight and chest and minimum chest expansion of 5cms. Overall, you must be in good health, both physically and mentally. You should not have any health issues which would prevent you from performing your duties on board a ship or ashore.

    With regard to visual standards the criteria is: Without Glasses – Better eye: 6/6; Worse eye: 6/9; With Glasses - Better eye: 6/6; Worse eye: 6/6.

    Ensure that you do not have permanent body tattoos other than on the inner face of forearms & on the reverse side of palm/ back side of the hand.




SSR Selection tests

You will be eligible for SSR on the basis of merit as per your performance in the Written Test, a qualifying Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and fitness in the medical exams. The various recruitment tests/exams are as follows:
  1. Format of written test: It is an objective type question paper of one hour duration and you need to pass in all the four sections as well as in aggregate. The paper will be available in both Hindi and English. The four sections - English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge - is based on the syllabus of 10+2 standard. You can check this syllabus on the official website.

  2. Format of Physical Fitness Test (PFT): You need to complete a 1.6 km run in 7 minutes, do 20 squat ups and 10 push-ups.

  3. Medical exam: Even if you pass the initial medical exam, you need to also undergo a final medical exam at INS Chilka and only on passing this exam will you be eligible for enrollment for training.

Training process

Your training for the course will begin in February 2018. In case of unsatisfactory performance during any part of the basic or professional training, you will be discharged as unsuitable. The full training process includes:
  • Basic training at INS Chilka: 22 weeks

  • Professional training: After successful completion of basic training, you will begin professional training in an allotted trade in various Naval Training establishments.


On completion of the entire training process, you will be initially engaged in the Indian Navy for a period of 15 years.

Benefits for Indian Navy SSR

Pay and allowances: You will receive a stipend of Rs.5,700/- per month during the initial training period. Subsequently you will be placed in the Pay Band or Rs 5,200-Rs.20,200 + Grade Pay of Rs 2,000/- + MSP of Rs 2,000/- + DA.

You are entitled to promotion up to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer-I with pay scale of Rs 9,300-34800 + Grade Pay of Rs 4,800/- + MSP of Rs 2,000/- + DA. You can also avail of opportunities to commissioned officer based on your performance and qualifying through the prescribed exams.

You are entitle to receive free of cost food, accommodation, books, uniforms, etc.

You are entitled to medical treatment, leave travel concessions for yourself and your dependents, group housing benefits, annual & casual leave, children education allowances, etc. Post retirement benefits include pension, gratuity and leave encashment. Insurance cover of Rs 37.50 lakhs is also provided for all sailors.



How to apply

Submit your application in online mode only at the official website, uploading the scanned documents in original as required, namely the Matric certificate and the 10+2 mark sheet. The scanned photo required should be very clear and have a blue background.

The registration process is as follows:
  1. Register at Indian Navy website with your email ID, this email ID being required for all communications henceforth.

  2. Log in with the registered email ID and go to 'Current Opportunities', where you should click on the 'Apply' button.

  3. After filling up the online application form in all respects, ensure that the details are correct, as also requisite documents scanned & uploaded. Then click on the 'Submit' button.

Next steps:
  1. By the end of August 2017, the call-up letters cum Admit Card will be tentatively uploaded on the official website for eligible short listed candidates. This will provide the date, time and place for the SSR recruitment tests, which are scheduled for the months of September / October 2017. You have to appear for the tests at the centre allotted to you.

  2. At the time of appearing for the recruitment test, you need to produce all original certificates, mark sheets and NCC certificate (if applicable). The details of these documents must match the ones which you uploaded during the online application process, otherwise your candidature will be cancelled. The results of the written test will be announced on the same day and if you qualify, then you will appear for the physical fitness test and the initial medical exam, these taking place over one or two days.

  3. On 21st December 2017, the merit list of all qualifying candidates will be put up at the official website. If your name is on the list, then you need to report to INS Chilka for the final medical exam on the date and at the time mentioned in your call letter (along with the call letter you will also receive a Police Verification form which needs to be submitted to verify your antecedents). At this time, you must submit self attested certificates which you had submitted in the online application process, along with the original certificates.
