International Relations is a much sought-after subject for the student of Humanities stream. In this article, the author discusses in detail the career prospects of Post-Graduation in International Relations.

With the passage of time the world is becoming smaller. But at the same time, the relationship between/among two or more countries are becoming more and more complex. Nowadays, it cannot be stated that the relationship between two countries is very cordial. There may be various undertones of disagreement between two friendly countries. At the same time, in spite of the long standing enmity between two countries, a spirit of cooperation works. Nowadays, various groups are being formed by the countries to take care of their common interests. So, it is very necessary to understand the complex equations working in the field of international relations.

International Relations is an academic discipline which stresses the study of a country's policy in respect of the other countries or the world. This is a vast discipline encompassing various aspects (political, economic and social) of relationship among countries. In this article we are going to discuss the study of International Relations in India and career prospects of students studying Post-Graduation in International Relations.



Study of International Relations

In case of conventional subjects, generally a student does Graduation and then goes for Post-Graduation, usually in the same subject. However, in case of International Relations, there are very few universities in India which teach International Relations at Graduation level. Some of the Indian universities teaching International Relations at Graduation level are:

However, there are comparatively more universities which offer Post-Graduation in International Relations. Some of the eminent Indian universities which offer Post- Graduation in International Relations are as under:

  3. Pondicherry University, Puducherry
  4. Delhi University, New Delhi
  5. Christ University, Bengaluru
  6. South Asian University, New Delhi
  7. University of Madras, Chennai


In addition to all these reputed universities which offer Post-Graduation in International Relations, many other universities of India also offer this course at Post-Graduation level. Generally, students with Political Science at Graduation level go for Post-Graduation in International Relations. However, there are many exceptions. Many students from other streams join M.A in International Relations.

Career prospects of Post-Graduate students in International Relations

Civil Services

Indian Civil Services Examination is open for all Graduates. However, the students of International Relations automatically get some benefits at the time of interview while answering questions on international relations. Furthermore, if a student of International Relations joins Indian Foreign Service, his/her academic background helps him/her.

As Intelligence Analyst

A student of International Relations can also work as intelligence specialist in armed forces and security agencies. His/Her training helps in maintaining intelligence databases and preparation of reports on activities of various countries.

As Political Analyst

A student of international relation can also work in newspapers and periodicals as political analyst. His academic training helps him to analyze various issues including diplomatic and political involving more than one country.

As an International Lawyer

A student of International Relations can deal with International Trade Law, Finance and Banking and Arbitration between countries. However, for this purpose additional degree in Law is necessary.

As a Lobbyist

A Lobbyist is a person who represents his/her organization before Government. The main role of the lobbyist is to persuade the Government to make a decision or amending previous law/rule. Many students of International Relations work successfully as international lobbyist.

Working in International Organizations

Students of International Relations can find suitable placement in various U.N. Agencies, ASEAN Security, WHO and in SAARC as international relations specialists.

Working in Non-Profit Organizations

A student of International Relations can also work in various NGOs whose scope and area of work transcends the boundaries of a particular country.

Working as a Lecturer

The students of International Relations can also join the faculty position in various universities after qualifying the National Eligibility Test (NET).

Again a good article about the chances for a person who completed MA internal relations. The author as usual has given different universities where one can study graduation and post graduation with this subject.
As the output from a college with this qualification is very less in number, they will have more opportunities of getting employment. After completing post graduation, anyone interested can also pursue their Doctorate degree in this subject from any of the universities listed above in the article.
