National Institute of Kathak Dance, a constituent unit of Sangeet Natak Akademi, has announced admissions open for the academic session 2017-2018, inviting applications from eligible students for Kathak Dance and Music Training courses offered by Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. Outstation students can avail of hostel facility or subsidy towards house rent for the advance courses.

Kathak Dance courses

Elementary Courses

  1. 5-Year Foundation Course:
    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: 10 to 15 years, as on 1st June 2017

    • Educational qualification: Should have completed class 3

    • Communication skills: (i)As per age, the appropriate ability to talk, read and write in Hindi or English; (ii) You should have an above average sense of rhythm and music and be able to convey it through facial expressions & body movement.

    • Fitness: You must be in general good physical & mental health.

    • Desirable: Some prior exposure to Kathak or some prior training in Kathak

  2. 3-Year Diploma (Pass) Course:
    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: 15 to 20 years, as on 1st June 2017

    • Educational qualification: Should have completed class 9

    • Communication skills: As per age, the appropriate ability to talk, read and write in Hindi or English.

    • Fitness: You must be in general good physical & mental health.

    • Desirable: Experience or interest in Kathak

Advance courses


  1. Diploma (Hons.) 1st year: This a 3 years' course.
    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: 18 to 23 years, as on 1st June 2017

    • Qualification: You should have successfully completed Diploma Course (Pass class) from Kathak Kendra or equivalent training.

  2. Post Diploma 1st year: This is a 2 years' course.
    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: 20 to 26 years, as on 1st June 2017

    • Qualification: You should have successfully completed Diploma Course from Kathak Kendra or equivalent training.

  3. Refresher course:
    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: below 40 years as on 1st June 2017

    • Qualification: You should have successfully completed Diploma (Hons.) Course / Post Diploma Course from Kathak Kendra or equivalent training.




Music courses

  1. One year Certificate Course (Tabla / Pakhawaj): Those who are talented & have an aptitude for playing percussion instruments, with a sensitivity to rhythms should apply for this course.

    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: 14 to 17 years, as on 1st June 2017

    • Educational qualification: You should have completed class 6.

    • Communication skills: As per age, the appropriate ability to talk, read and write in Hindi or English.

    • Fitness: You must be in general good physical & mental health.

  2. Diploma Course (Tabla / Pakhawaj) – 1st year: This course is of 5 years' duration.

    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: 15 to 20 years, as on 1st June 2017

    • Educational qualification: You should have completed Class 8.

    • Music Qualification: You should have minimum 1 year training certificate in Tabla/Pakhawaj

    Communication skills & fitness requirements are same as mentioned for the certificate course.

  3. Special Course in Vocal Music – 1st year: This course is of 3 years' duration. Those with a good grounding in Vocal Music can apply for this course.

    Eligibility requirements:
    • Age criteria: 18 to 30 years, as on 1st June 2017

    • Educational qualification: You should have a Senior Secondary school certificate or equivalent exam certificate.

    Communication skills & fitness criteria is the same as for the certificate course.

Course Fees

For Dance Courses

  1. Foundation course: Rs. 300/- p.m.

  2. Diploma (Pass): Rs. 350/- p.m.

  3. Diploma (Honours): Rs. 400/- p.m.

  4. Post Diploma: Rs. 500/- p.m.

  5. Refresher Course: Rs. 1000/- p.m.

  6. For ICCR Scholarship holder: Rs. 5000/- per month

For Music Courses

  1. Certificate Course: Rs. 300/- p.m.

  2. Diploma Course (Tabla/Pakhawaj): Rs. 500/- p.m.

  3. Special Course in Vocal Music: Rs. 1000/- p.m.

Note: Above fees are to be paid on a 6-monthly basis.

Fees payable

  1. Admission Fee: Rs. 300/- at the time of admission.

  2. Security Deposit (this will be refunded in case of no dues): Rs. 1000/- at the time of admission.

  3. Library Charges (this is non-refundable): Rs. 500/- at the time of admission.

Freeships

Students who are awarded a Freeship for a course are exempt from paying the Tuition Fees. You are eligible to apply for the Fresship if your parents' or guardians' total monthly income is below or up to Rs.8,000/-. You will need to submit an income statement certified by a S.D.M. as supporting documentary proof of income. Note that if you fail to qualify in the half-yearly or annual exam, then you will no longer be eligible to avail the facility of Freeship.

Scholarships and stipends are also offered to the students in various courses. Check the admission notification for further details.

How to apply

  1. You can download the application form along with the Prospectus from the Kathak Kendra official website
    OR
    You can collect the application form and the prospectus on payment of Rs.60/- from: Kathak Kendra, 1, San Martin Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi – 110021. Dates: 6th June 2017 to 20th June 2017, between 10a.m. and 50.m. on all working days.

  2. Submit the completed application form to: Kathak Kendra, 2, San Martin Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi – 110021 along with a Demand Draft of Rs.200/- in favour of 'Director, Kathak Kendra' payable at New Delhi.

Last date of receipt of application: 22nd June 2017.

Selection process

Based on the application submitted, if you are eligible, you will be called for a pre-admission test (refer to the test schedule below.) Admission Test results will be displayed on the notice board of the Kendra as well as at the official website. Then candidates are admitted to the appropriate training course based on merit and availability of seats. Those selected for admission must complete all admission-related formalities by 20th July 2017.

  3. Display of Short-listed candidates on Notice Board & Web-site for the Admission Tests: 27 June, 2017

Admission Test Schedule

  1. Kathak Dance courses: 3-Year Diploma (Hons) Course- 1st Year, 2-Year Post Diploma Course- 1st Year and Refresher course: 6th & 7th July, 2017.

  2. Music course: 5- Year Diploma Course (Tabla/Pakhawaj) – 1st Year and 3-Year Special Course in Vocal Music – 1st Year: 12th July, 2017.

  3. Results declaration date of all courses: 14th July, 2017.

  4. Submission of fees & completion of requisite formalities: 17th to 20th July, 2017.

  5. Classes begin for new batches on: 20th July, 2017.
