I have outlined below some of the courses in the field of pharmacy from Diploma to Doctoral level. Following are the 5 main courses which you can choose:-
1) Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm)
2) Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)
3) Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm)
4) Doctorate in Pharmacy (Pharm.D)
5) Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences
1) Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm):
D.Pharm is an undergraduate diploma certificate course in the field of pharmacy. The duration of this course is 2 years and practical training session. It covers the basic information and all subjects related to pharmacy. The candidate must have completed 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology as compulsory subjects. He/she must have completed 17 years at the time of admission. Once you complete D.Pharm you will be eligible for diploma certificate. You can either work at drug stores in private or Government hospitals. The admission process will be based on the institute you join, it could be direct or merit based. Age limit for this examination is at least 17 years.
2) Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm):
B.Pharm is an undergraduate course in the field of pharmacy. It is one of the most popular course after 12th standard. The student should pass with at least 50% marks with biology or biotechnology as one of the subjects in order to pursue this course. The duration of this course is 4 years, each is divided into 8 semesters. Once you complete B.Pharm you can either practice as a Pharmacist or even apply for drug inspector or pharmacist government jobs exams. There are many job opportunities in both the public and the private sector.
3) Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm):
After completing B.Pharm it is hard to get a good job. If you are not interested in the job, you can go for M.Pharm and pursue a higher degree. M.Pharm is a postgraduate course in the field of pharmacy. It is a 4-year course after B.Pharm graduation. After completing this course you can go for higher studies, work for a company, lecturer in universities, pharmacist, drug inspector, drug squad in the police department, etc. Before getting qualified as a pharmacist you have to undertake pre-registration training.
4) Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D):
Pharm.D is a doctorate degree in the field of pharmacy education. Once you complete Pharm.D the students are eligible to go for Ph.D. Programme.
There are two types in Pharm.D:-
a) Pharm.D - The duration of this course is 6 years (5 years - classroom study and 1 year - internship). The student must have done 12th with Chemistry, Physics as compulsory subjects in order to be eligible for this course.
b) Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate) – The duration of this course is 3 years. The student has to complete his B.Pharm in order to be eligible for this course.
5) Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences:
Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences is the highest degree in the pharmacy field. A candidate who has completed M.Pharm can either apply for this course or at least bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Engineering or Medicine is a must. As the pharmacist get involved in supplying the medicinal drugs, it's the pharmaceutical scientists who produce those drugs. If you want to pursue Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, then you must be interested in pharmaceutical research. Pharmaceutical scientists only study and focus on research, testing, or manufacturing of drugs, you will be doing a research on each drug.
In India, the colleges which provide pharmaceutical education must be first approved by All Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). In some states, the students are required to apply for national level or state level pharmacy entrance exam in order to get admission for the desired courses. In some colleges, direct admission may on the basis of seats available.
There are a huge number of job opportunities in pharmacy sector. You can either work in a private/government sector or even work in an abroad company. The graduate has to obtain practice license, in order to work as a pharmacist. A drug license is required for starting up a pharmacy business in India. The Central Drug Standard Control Organization and the State Drug Standard Control Organization issue the drug license in India. This organization issues two types of drug licenses for practicing the pharmacy business. One is retail drug license and the other one is wholesale drug license. The candidates can even work in the pharmaceutical companies in different departments such as manufacturing, packing, marketing, quality control, etc. The income depends on the qualification, knowledge, experience and communication skills of the candidate.
