Hockey was one of the most popular sports in India. Indian hockey players brought many laurels for the country. Slowly but steadily hockey has been regaining its lost popularity in India. The game of hockey is one of the oldest sports. The game was in existence even 1500 years ago. Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Persians and Ethiopians used to play different versions of hockey during ancient period. Some used to play just as recreation, others thought that playing hockey would make them better warriors. However, the modern version, i.e., the field hockey was developed in the British Island during the 19th century.

Like cricket and football, hockey was introduced in India by the British. The British Army Regiments used to play hockey in India. Very soon the game became popular among the Indians. The first hockey club came into existence in Kolkata during 1885. Soon many more hockey clubs were established in Bombay (now Mumbai) and Punjab. Later Uttar Pradesh also followed suit. India made its Olympic debut in hockey at the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928 and got the gold medal in the first appearance. That was the beginning of the triumphant journey of Indian hockey. This continued till 1976 Montreal Olympics, where Indian hockey suffered a setback.

However, conscious efforts are being made to again make hockey popular among Indians. Various hockey academies are trying to produce and train promising hockey players. In this article we are going to discuss five good hockey Academies all over the country.

Dhanraj Ballal Hockey Academy, Bengaluru

Dhanraj Ballal Hockey Academy was established by famous international hockey players Dhanraj Pillay and Ashish Ballal. The Academy was established in 2001. The main objective of the Academy is to train young players and to create a pool of good hockey players in the country.

Jai Bharat Hockey Academy, Delhi

Jai Bharat Hockey Academy was inaugurated in 2011 by Late KPS Gill, former President of Indian Hockey Federation. Jai Bharat Hockey Academy aims to provide best training facilities to the young hockey players of India. Trainees of the Academy are guided by M.K. Kaushik, former player and hockey coach, and Mamta Kharab, former international women's hockey player.

Jude Felix Hockey Academy, Bengaluru

Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Chandigarh

Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy was conceived and inaugurated by Lt. Gen. JFR Jacob (Retd.), the then Governor of Punjab and administrator of Chandigarh, in 2000. It provides best opportunity and training for both football and hockey players. Eminent coaches train promising hockey players in the Academy.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Academy, Amritsar

Amritsar Hockey Club has started this Academy in association with Springdale Educational Society. After preliminary trial, promising young players are selected and trained by eminent players like Jugraj Singh, Prabhjot Singh and other coaches. Every year 60 trainees are selected for training strictly on the basis of merit.
