How to apply for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya teaching and Principal jobs


Are you eager to take up a teaching job in a government school? Teaching jobs at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are much sought after, as are taking up the post of a JNV Principal. This article provides an overview of what is expected when taking up such a career, the general eligibility requirements and how candidates are selected. Details of the application process is also provided.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are Government residential schools are managed by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), which is under the aegis of the Department of School Education & Literacy, HR Ministry, Govt. of India.

Overview

There are some qualified teachers who seek government teaching jobs in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas as well as for the position of a Principal. The reason could be due to it being prestigious to be known as a 'Government teacher', for availing benefits of working in the government sector or due to lack of employment opportunities in the private sector .

While it may be highly beneficial to take up such an employment opportunity, it should be kept in mind that it is not merely a matter of teaching students of the JNV in a particular subject. As a JNV teacher, you are also expected to take up certain other duties which arise due to association with a residential school. Thus, you will be expected to supervise studies, plan and organize extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, generally care for the students overall welfare, etc. There is an initial probation period of about 2 years, during which your teaching skills & other abilities are assessed.

Also keep in mind that it is likely you will be appointed to a school in a North-Eastern State since many vacancies generally arise in that part of the country.



Check out if you fulfil the following eligibility requirements to become a JNV Teacher/Principal –

Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) eligibility requirements

  1. Age criteria: up to 40 years of age (this may change as per the rules of the academic session)

  2. Educational qualification:
    • You must have completed a 2-year Integrated Post Graduate M.Sc. Course from a Regional College of Education of NCERT in the requisite subject with at minimum 50% marks in aggregate; OR you should have a Master's Degree from a recognized university with minimum 50% marks in aggregate in the requisite subject.

    • You should have a B.Ed. degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized University.

  3. Language skills: You should be proficient in teaching in Hindi and English languages.

  4. Preferred: It would be advantageous to have some experience as TGT in a recognized institution in the subject, especially in a residential school. Knowledge of computers is also desirable.

Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) eligibility requirements

Those applying for TGT vacancies (including posts for TGT third language teachers) should have passed the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) conducted by CBSE and fulfil these criteria as well:
  1. Age criteria: up to 35 years of age (this may change as per the rules of the academic session)

  2. Educational qualification:
    • You should have completed a 4-year integrated degree course of Regional College of Education of NCERT with minimum 50% marks in the subject as well as in the aggregate or You should have a Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognized University with 50% marks or above in aggregate as well as in the concerned subject.

    • You should have B.Ed. or equivalent from a recognized University.

  3. Language skills: It is expected that you are competent to teach through English and Hindi/concerned Regional language as the case may be.

  4. Desirable qualifications: You should have some experience of working in a residential school and possess computer knowledge.

Note: In the case of those applying for Mathematics, Science and Social Studies TGT vacancies, specific subjects will need to have been pursued at the graduate level, details of which are mentioned in the recruitment notification when advertised.

Other general miscellaneous vacancies

In the case of teaching positions for Music, Art. Physical Education, etc. the age criteria is generally up to maximum 35 years. You should have the requisite certification/degree/diploma, with experience in a residential school preferred.

JNV Principal eligibility requirements

  1. Age: It is generally 35 to 45 years, this being liable to change.

  2. Educational qualifications:
    1. You must have a Master's Degree from a recognized university with minimum 50%.

    2. You should have a B.Ed. or equivalent teaching degree.

  3. Experience: You should be working in a Sr. Secondary (10+2) school/Inter college which is a government or semi-government school / Govt. recognized/CBSE affiliated institute. In the institute, you should be holding an analogous post or holding the post of a Vice-Principal in the scale as prescribed at the time of applying with 10 years experience/service as PGT/Lecturer in the scale as prescribed or having at least 12 years experience/service as PGT/Master/Lecturer in a senior secondary school in the scale prescribed.

  4. Language skills: You must be proficient in English and Hindi/concerned regional language.

  5. Additional requirements: It is preferred that you should be having minimum 3 years of experience as House Master of a fully residential school or work experience in a fully residential/CBSE affiliated/Govt. recognized school.

Selection process

Candidates are selected on the basis of written exam and, for certain teaching posts, on the basis of a personal interview as well. The written exam is conducted at multiple centers in various cities of India. You must have a valid Admit Card to appear for the exam. Those having a physical disability of 40% or more are permitted to have a scribe if they so wish and a compensatory time is provided for them.

A merit list is drawn up on the basis of the marks scored in the written exam & interview and the final mode of selection will be at the discretion of JNV Samiti.

Application process

Application for all posts is done only via the online mode at the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti official website . Candidates should register & apply with an email ID. Recent photograph and signature needs to be scanned and kept ready for uploading where required in the online application form. An exam fee also needs to be paid online, with SC / ST / PH categories and women candidates being exempt from paying this fee.

Once completely filled in, the candidate must take a printout of the application form, affix a photo, and bring this for the interview session along with self-attested copies of requisite certificates & documents.
