# Operations with integers - easy solving methods

### Introduction

There are different types of number system in mathematics. Like natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, etc. Integers are whole numbers which contains negative numbers, positive numbers and zero. For examples:----------3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ----------- are integers.

Most of the students face the problem to solve integers and when fail, they develop maths phobia. In this article you will find a simple method to solve different operations with integers.

### Addition and subtraction of integers

It is very easy to solve addition and subtraction of integers. I am providing two simple rules to solve addition and subtraction of integers. If the sign of two numbers are same, apply the first rule and if the sign of two numbers are different then apply the second rule.#### Rule No. 1

If the sign of the two numbers are same i.e. both numbers are positive or both numbers are negative , then add them without taking sign. After adding put the sign of greater number in the answer.For examples:

- If you have to solve -6 -21. Then according to rule, you have see the sign of the numbers. Both are negative numbers. Hence you have to add both the numbers. The sum of 6 and 21 is 27. Now put the sign of greater number in the answer. The greater number is 21 (as numerical) hence the answer will be -27.

so, -6-21 =-27. - If you have to solve +6+21. Then again the sign of both the numbers are same, i.e. both are positive numbers. So you have to add both the numbers. The sum of 6 and 21 will be 27. Now the greater number is 21 which is positive, so put the positive sign in the answer. Hence answer of the +6+21 will be +27.

#### Rule No. 2

If the sign of two numbers are different then we will subtract the smaller number from the bigger number (as numeric). After that put the sign of bigger number in the answer. For examples:- If you have to solve +6 -21, then see the sign of both the numbers. Since the sign of both the numbers are different, hence we will subtract 6 from 21 (As 21 is bigger number than 6) the answer will be 15. Now put the sign of bigger number in answer. The sign of 21 is negative so, the answer will be -15.
- If you have to solve -6 +21, then see the sign of both the numbers. Since the sign of both the numbers are different, hence we will subtract 6 from 21 (As 21 is bigger number than 6) the answer will be 15. Now put the sign of bigger number in answer. The sign of 21 is positive so, the answer will be +15.

### Multiplication and division of integers

Now we will learn to solve multiplication and division of integers. The multiplication and division of integers are same as simple multiply and division. We have to only learn to put sign in the answer. Two negatives become a positive number. To solve multiplication please remember:- + X + = +
- + X - = -
- - X + = -
- - X - =+

For example you have to solve :

- +3 X +3 = +9
- -3 X +3 = -9
- +3 X -3 = -9
- -3 X -3 =+9

Same rule is applicable for the division of integers.
