CAT admission 2017 for Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)

Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based entrance examination would be conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management on November 26, 2017 in two sessions. CAT is one of the largest entrance test conducted all over the country for Master of Business Administration (MBA) Studies. For admission to various Post Graduate and Fellow Programmes of IIMs, CAT 2017 is a pre-requisite. The scores obtained in CAT 2017 are allowed by the listed non-IIM member institutions.

Eligibility criteria for CAT 2017


  • The candidate should have completed bachelors degree with 50% marks from a recognized university/have a CGPA of 45% for candidates belonging to scheduled caste(SC), schedule tribe(ST) and persons with disability (PWD) categories from a recognized university

  • Candidates who are appearing for the final year bachelor's degree or qualifying equivalent examination and who are awaiting results can also apply

  • candidates who have completed professional degrees CA/CS/ICWA from recognized universities with required percentages

  • The eligibility of the candidates would be verified by IIM's at various stages of selection process

  • The candidates percentage of marks would be calculated based on the rules practiced by the respective universities

  • Fulfilling the minimum eligibility criteria will not ensure for short listing the candidates

  • Registration process


  • Registration fee for SC, ST and PwD category candidates is Rs. 900

  • Registration fee for Candidates of other categories is Rs. 1800

  • The registration fees for the candidates is only once , irrespective of the number of institutes he/she is applies for. Fees is not refundable

  • Registration is through online net banking with debit/credit card

  • Registration opening date: August 9, 2017

  • Registration closing date: September 20, 2017 (5:00pm)

  • Admit card download: October 18 to November 26, 2017

  • CAT test date: November 26, 2017

  • Test details


    The CAT test is a computer based/ a digital test. CAT examination does not have prescribed syllabus for preparation. The questions are of multiple choice questions (MCQ's) and some are direct questions. A question is displayed on the computer screen; the candidate has to click on the correct answer from among the options given. Answers to be typed if no answer is provided. The computer screen displays the time for the current section. The test is conducted in two sessions in two different test forms; The first selection test consists of three sections:
  • Section I- Verbal ability and reading comprehension (VARC) -60 minutes

  • Section II- Data Interpretation & logical reasoning (DILR) – 60 minutes

  • Section III- Quantitative ability (QA)- 60 minutes

  • Total marks is for 100 and time duration is 180 minutes. Each correct answer gets +3 marks and incorrect answer gets -1

  • Candidates can attempt CAT 2017 mock test to become familiar with the test format, functionality and for practicing navigation for the actual examination. The mock test link will be available by October end 2017. The Second Selection test consists of;
  • Written Ability Test (WAT)

  • Group Discussion (GD)

  • Performance in CAT 2017

  • Results announcement


    Results will be announced in the second week of January 2018 tentatively. CAT 2017 score cards of candidates would be made available at CAT website. The score cards would be valid only till Dec 31, 2018. Candidates list selected for next level of selection would be available on the respective IIMs websites.     Admission procedure


    Each Indian Institute of Management (IIM) has independent mandate of their own eligibility criteria which includes academic cut offs and relative weights. They also follow different selection processes. CAT 2017 performance is very important for selection process. Academic performance, work experience are also considered.

    Centres for test


    The CAT test is conducted around 140 cities spread across the country. The candidates can select any four test cities of their choice. The details of the test centres in the cities would be available from 18, October 2017. The test centre name would be indicated in the admit card.

    Verification process


    At the time of interview, the candidate is required to show all mark sheets and submit attested copies of qualifying examination documents. It the candidate is selected for the program all the original certificates along with attested copies are to be submitted for verification at the joining program.

    A valid and unique email account must be declared and maintained, with a mobile phone number throughout the selection process.
