The exam unit of HR Group of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has announced the schedule of the December 2017 joint CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) for Junior Research Fellowship and eligibility for Lectureship. The test is tentatively scheduled for 17th December 2017, to be held in 27 cities across the country.

About CSIR-UGC NET

The test is for candidates who wish to apply for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for those who wish to be appointed as Lecturers (NET) in the disciplines which are under the faculty of Science & Technology. The JRF (NET) award is based on the candidate's admission/placement in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, as applicable.

A candidate can apply for one of these three:
JRF-Lectureship
Or
JRF
Or
Lectureship (LS)

If you qualify for JRF (NET), then you are also eligible for Lectureship (NET), with the provision that you fulfill the UGC eligibility criteria. Further, if you qualify for Lectureship, then you are eligible for recruitment as Lecturers as well as for JRF-ship in a Scheme/Project, if found suitable for the same. However, you will not be eligible for the Regular JRF-NET Fellowship.



Eligibility requirements

Nationality

Only candidates who are Indian nationals can apply.

Age criteria

  1. For JRF (NET): Your age should be maximum 28 years as on 1st July 2017. This may be relaxed up to 5 years in case of candidates applying in the categories of SC/ST/Persons with Disability(PwD) and for female applicants. The age may be relaxed up to 3 years in case of those applying in the category of OBC (non creamy layer) applicants.

  2. For LS (NET): There is no upper age limit.

Educational qualification

You should have an M.Sc or equivalent degree/ Integrated BS-MS/BS-4 years/BE/BTech/BPharma/MBBS with minimum score of 55% marks if applying under the category of General (UR) and OBC candidates; and 50% if applying under the category of SC/ST or Persons with Disability (PwD).

You can apply under the Result Awaited (RA) category in the subject if you are already enrolled for M.Sc or have completed 10+2+3 years of the above qualifying exam as on the closing date of online submission of application form with the provision that you will complete the qualifying degree with the requisite percentage of marks within the validity period of 2 years to avail the fellowship from the effective date of award. In such a case, you must submit the attestation format (Given at the reverse of the application form) duly certified by the Head of the Department/Institute from where you are appearing or have appeared.

You can apply if you are having a B.Sc. (Hons) or equivalent degree or are enrolled in an Integrated MS-Ph.D. program with at least 55% marks for General (UR) and OBC candidates; 50% marks is the requirement for SC/ST, Persons with disability (PwD). Those with a Bachelor's degree will be eligible for CSIR fellowship only after getting registered/enrolled for PhD/Integrated PhD program within the validity period of 2 years.

The eligibility for lectureship of NET qualified candidates will be as per the UGC-specified criteria. Ph.D. degree holders who have passed Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991, with at least 50% marks are eligible to apply for Lectureship only.

Note: If you are having only a Bachelor's degree, then you are ineligible for Lectureship.

Test format, subjects and syllabus

The test of 200 marks will be in the format of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), with negative marks given for an incorrect answer. In case it is found that the question itself was incorrect, then the benefit of marks will be given to only those who attempted the question. The3-hour test will be conducted in 2 sessions, from 9a.m. to 12 noon and from 2p.m. to 5p.m. The schedule as per subjects will be updated at the official website later.

Subjects of the test are:
  1. Chemical Sciences

  2. Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences

  3. Life Sciences

  4. Mathematical Sciences

  5. Physical Sciences

The Test Booklet has 3 sections:
  1. Part A: This section will be common to all subjects mentioned above, with General Aptitude questions focusing on logical reasoning, graphical analysis, analytical and numerical ability, quantitative comparison, etc.

  2. Part B: This section will have MCQs related to the subject, including topics as per the subject's syllabus.

  3. Part C: This section has analytical questions aimed to test your knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of these concepts.

Exam fee

The exam fee should be deposited in any branch of the Indian Bank in India via Bank challan or via RTGS/NEFT through any bank. No other mode of payment will be accepted. The fee is as per category –
  • Rs.1000/- for General category candidates

  • Rs.500/- for Other Backward Classes(OBC)-Non Creamy Layer

  • Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/ Persons with Disability (PwD)

Note: OBC Candidates not belonging to OBC Non Creamy Layer should indicate their category as 'General'.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted in online mode once only at the official CSIR website after downloading the Bank challan proforma and then depositing the requisite exam fee.

Once you have successfully submitted the online application, the system will automatically generate a Form Number, this number being important for all future reference and for downloading your e-Admit Card.

You must take a print out of the filled-in online application form for future use. On the print out of the application form, paste your most recent passport size photo and sign at the required space. Then attach the requisite caste certificate (if applicable) and send along with a CSIR-marked copy of the fee deposited Bank Challan in an envelope which is superscribed with Subject Code, Centre Code & Medium Code to:

This hard copy (print out) of the application must reach the above office on or before 23rd September, 2017 (3rd October 2017 for those sending from remote areas).

Note: Merely submitting the online application does not indicate that you have been registered for the Test. You are expected to check your registration status at the official website (csirhrdg.res.in) between 23rd to 29th November, 2017 (tentative dates), after which your requests will not be accepted.

  3. Closing date of online submission of Application: 16th September 2017

  4. Last date of receipt of duly completed hard copy of online application in the Examination Unit (other than remote areas): 23rd September 2017

  5. Last date of receipt of duly completed hard copy of online application in the Examination Unit from remote areas: 3rd October 2017

  6. Last Date for receipt of written request for change of Examination Centre only on merit basis: 20th October 2017

  7. Tentative date of publication of list of candidates registered for test at official website: 17th November 2017

  8. Last date for accepting of representation about non-registration for this test: 23rd November 2017

  9. Issue of e-Admission Certificate to registered candidates: First week of December 2017

  10. Date of Exam: 17th December 2017
