25th Jan 2017

For the past few weeks, it was very hectic due to so much work and travel. I was not getting enough rest so I had a word with my Team Lead that I would prefer to take an off on Friday i.e 27th Jan 2017 so that I would get a long weekend along with the 26th Jan 2017. It was a planned mini vacation from 26th -29th Jan. I didn't know what was in store for me. There is proverb which says like this :
"Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand."

26th Jan 2017

I got sick that day with a severe headache and loss of appetite. I hardly felt like eating anything, by evening I threw up everything that I ate. I thought it might be because of the hectic weeks I had for the month. That day I slept early due to exhaustion.

27th Jan 2017

I woke up around 4:00 AM with a slight pain below my rib. I ignored it thinking it might be because of the wrong position that I am sleeping. So I slept straight and tried to get back to sleep. But the pain slowly started increasing and I could hardly turn around or sleep straight. I went to drink a glass water hoping that it would disappear. But with the passage of time, the pain started spreading and I could no longer bear with it. I could hardly stop my tears from flowing due to the pain, I ran to my parent's room and told them about the pain. My dad suspected that it was kidney stone pain as even he had experienced it a few years back. Every single drop of water that I drank I threw up, even the painkillers which I had wasn't spared. So we rushed to the doctor he gave two medicines immediately and after few checks diagnosed me with Kidney Stone. To confirm that we did a sonography and found that there were two kidney stone and slight swelling in my kidney. I started with the homeopathy treatment and now after eight months, there is no trace of Kidney Stone.

The medical term used for Kidney Stone is Renal Calculi or Nephrolithiasis.

How and Why Kidney Stones are Formed ?

In simple words, the function of Kidney is to filter waste. We have two bean-shaped kidney which is present to the left and right side of the spine. That's why during kidney stone attack you will experience a severe pain in the lower back. To understand how kidney stone is formed let's imagine a glass of water which has few soil particles in it. Keep it on the table for few minutes and you will observe that the sand particles have settled down. The same thing happens when you hold your urine for long. So it's very important that you urinate when there is an urge. When you drink a very little amount of water it is not enough to dilute the urine and the waste will start to accumulate in the kidney as small crystals. These small crystals form the kidney stone. That's the reason we need to drink ample amount of water. The size of kidney stone will depend on the amount of crystal deposited in the kidney. It can be as small as 2mm to 10mm sometimes even more than that size.

So below are the causes of Kidney Stone
  • Hereditary and Diet : If anyone in your family has a history of kidney stone attack then there are very high chances that even you might get it
  • Drinking Less Water : If you drink less water, the filtered waste will be very concentrated and in turn, it will form crystals
  • Recurrence : If you have already had one kidney stone attack then you are more prone to get the attacks again

Symptoms of Kidney Stone

It is difficult to detect the presence of kidney stone unless it decides to make its presence known to us by the excruciating pain. Sometimes it might even go unnoticed and might even pass through the urine without any medication.

  1. The pain is sudden which starts from below the rib and spreads to the lower back or abdomen
  2. Frequent urge to urinate but a difficulty in passing the urine
  3. Nauseous
  4. Chills and fever
  5. Blood in the urine

Visit the doctor immediately if there are any of the symptoms above. After taking the painkiller make an immediate visit so that they can diagnose and treatment can be started immediately if the size of the stone is larger than 5mm. If the size of the stone is lesser than 5mm it can be treated with medication but if it's larger than 5mm, there are different surgical and non-surgical treatment available.

Good attempt by the author mixed with her first hand experience. Eating right food and drinking more water will certainly prevent the stone formation. We should not ignore the pain or any unusual things happening in body.

A true account of a patient in which 'intense pain' stands out. This is the truth about Kidney stones. Pain is the major symptom which means the stone trying to move in the urine tube (ureter) or the stone obstructing the kidney is making the kidney to swell due to back pressure effect.

An initial Ultrasound is useful but does not exclude kidney stones, hence often ultrasound is followed by a plain CT scan of the KUB(kidney, ureter and bladder) region.

Patients who have diabetes mellitus, abnormal kidneys from birth (single kidney) and kidney donors should be aware of kidney stones and seek professional advice quickly as the risk of infection (in diabetic patients) and compromising function of the only kidney can be potentially dangerous.

It is safer to get a medical (urology) consult early because large stones do not pass easily and a blocked kidney is a potential source of major infection, sepsis and kidney function can be compromised in the long run.

Some people who have recurrent kidney stones should be screened for high calcium levels due to disease of parathyroid glands, have their diet history checked in detail; avoiding consumption of large volumes of carbonated drinks (that contain phosphoric acid) helps in containing recurrent stone formation.

Once pain settles, the further treatment depends on the size of the stone, blockage of the ureter, infection of kidney etc. Smaller stones are encouraged to be passed out. Larger stones (>7 mm) will need monitoring and often intervention after a professional assessment by a urologist. Most of these can be managed by endoscopic means (rarely is open surgery needed now a days).
