Apply online for National Institute of Design B.Des, M.Des., GDPD admissions 2018-2019


Looking for B.Des. and M.Des. courses in India? National Institute of Design has announced online admissions open for 2018-2019 to its B.Des. program at Ahmedabad, M.Des. program at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru and Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) at Kurukshetra and Vijayawada. Details of eligibility criteria, fees and specializations of each program have been provided in this application, as also how to submit the online application for admission.

The National Institute of Design (NID) invites applications from Indian and foreign nationals for its B.Des., M.Des. and GDPD programs for the academic session 2018-2019. Those applying for admissions will have to appear for the Design Aptitude Test (DAT).

Important Dates

  1. Last date to submit online application: 31st October 2017, 1400hrs.

  2. Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims: 7th January 2018 (Sunday).

Overview

NID is a globally recognized multi-disciplinary institution in the field of design education and research and is recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. NID campuses are located at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru.

NID Programs

Bachelor of Design

The Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) program is of four years duration and is offered only at NID Ahmedabad. There are 100 seats for Indian Nationals, including those for reserved categories, and 15 seats for foreign nationals under overseas (supernumerary) candidates' category. You can specialize in the following areas:
  1. Faculty of Industrial Design:
    • Ceramic & Glass Design (10 seats)

    • Furniture & Interior Design (10 seats)

    • Product Design (15 seats)

  2. Faculty of Communication Design:
    • Animation Film Design (15 seats)

    • Exhibition Design (10 seats)

    • Film & Video Communication (10 seats)

    • Graphic Design (15 seats)

  3. Faculty of Textile, Apparel, Lifestyle and Accessory Design: Textile Design (15 seats)

On getting admission, you must attend a one year foundation program. The discipline of choice will be allotted based on merit and choice only after successful completion of the foundation program.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Age criteria:
    General category: 20 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1998 are eligible to apply.)

    Reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST): 23 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1995 are eligible to apply.)

    PwD category: 25 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1993 are eligible to apply.)

    Foreign Nationals: 20 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1998 are eligible to apply)

  2. Educational qualifications:
    You should have passed or will be appearing for the higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examination in the academic year 2017–18 in any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, etc.) from a recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent. (refer to the official notification to know the list of acceptable equivalent exams.)

    Foreign nationals: Those holding citizenship of a country other than the Republic of Indi are eligible to apply only under the overseas (supernumerary) category, provided they fulfill all the eligibility criteria.

B.Des. Fees: 1st Semester – Rs.1,63,020 / 2nd Semester – Rs.1,52,365.



Master of Design (M.Des.)

The M.Des. program is of 2 years' duration and is offered at the NID campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar. The disciplines and number of seats available for each is displayed in the table below:

Note: You can apply for a maximum of two disciplines. As per Govt. of India guidelines, seats are reserved for various categories. Two seats per specialisation are allotted for overseas (supernumerary) candidates. Once you submit an application to a specific discipline, you cannot transfer it at any stage of the admissions process.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Age criteria:
    General category: 30 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1988 are eligible to apply)

    Reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST): 33 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1985 are eligible to apply)

    PwD category: 35 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1983 are eligible to apply)

    Foreign Nationals: 30 years is the upper age limit, as on 30th June 2018 (those born on or after 1st July 1988 are eligible to apply)

  2. Educational qualifications: You should have any of the below mentioned minimum qualification to be eligible for admission to the M.Des. program:
    Bachelor degree of minimum 4-year duration in any specialization, after 10+2 system, from any recognized university or institute. You should have passed or have appeared for or will be appearing for the Bachelor degree examinations before July 2018.
    OR
    Bachelor degree of minimum 3-year duration in any specialization, under the 10+2 system. You should have passed the Bachelor degree examination before July 2017.
    OR
    Full-time Diploma of minimum 4-year duration in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/ Architecture, after 10+2 system, from any recognized university or institute recognized university or institute. You should have passed or have appeared for or will be appearing for the Diploma examination before July 2018.

    Note: If you have been awarded the degree/certificate by a university/board of any country other than India, you must obtain an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, at the time of document verification. (Refer: http://www.aiu.ac.in/index.asp)

    Foreign citizens: Those holding citizenship of a country other than the Republic of Indi are eligible to apply only under the overseas category, provided they fulfill all the eligibility criteria.

M.Des. program fees

  1. M.Des. at Ahmedabad campus: 1st Semester – Rs.1,54,800 / 2nd Semester – Rs.1,44,000

  2. M.Des. at Gandhinagar campus: 1st Semester – Rs.1,92,020 / 2nd Semester – Rs.1,81,365

  3. M.Des. at Bengaluru campus: 1st Semester – Rs. 1,76,190 / 2nd Semester – Rs. 1,65,390

Note: The Ahmedabad and Bengaluru campus are both non-residential for the M.Des. programs.

GDPD Programs

  1. The Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) at NID Kurukshetra consists of a foundation program of two semesters and then 6 semesters of specialized studies in any one of these faculties: Industrial Design, Communication Design and Textile & Apparel Design. There are 60 seats available for the 2018-2019 academic session.

    Fees: Total fees for the first year (two semesters): Rs.1,85,000.

  2. The Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) at NID Vijayawada is a full-time four year program with specialisation streams of Industrial Design, Communication Design and Textile & Apparel Design. There are 20 seats for each of these streams.

How to apply

The application process for all the NID programs is the same. The steps to apply are as follows:
  1. Register online at the NID Admissions website. For this registration, you must provide a valid email address and an active mobile number which will be used for all future communication.

  2. Login credentials will be sent to you via email. Now you can log in to your account using the login and password.

  3. Fill the online application form with all the required details. You can click on 'Save & Exit' to complete the form at a later time or date.Once you have filled in all the details, click 'Save & Proceed'.

  4. Now upload your documents and signature. This will include uploading a scanned recent passport photo in JPG/JPEG format, not exceeding 100 KB in size. It must be a coloured photograph taken at a professional studio. The signature file should be digitally photographed or scanned and cropped to the required size in JPG/JPEG format, not exceeding 100 KB in size. Where applicable, the caste certificate / Disability certificate should be issued by a competent authority. It must be in JPG/JPEG format, not exceeding 150 KB in size. Those applying under the Overseas category must upload the first and last page of their valid passport, clearly showing all of their personal information.     After uploading all the requisite documents, click on 'Save and Exit' to complete the form at a later time or, if completed, click on 'Save and Proceed' to go to the next state, namely payment of the application fee.

  5. Pay the online application fee via credit/debit card or pay it in the offline mode with a Demand Draft.

    Those paying online will be redirected to the 'Print' section where you can save your form as a PDF file and print it. You do not need to send this print out if paying the fee online.

    If you are paying the fee offline, you need to make a Demand Draft (DD) of the amount in favour of 'All India Management Association' payable at New Delhi. Fill in the details of the Demand Draft online to complete the submission process. Save the Application Form as a PDF File and print it. This should be done latest by 1400 hrs. on 31st October 2017. Send the DD and a printout of your application form in a single envelope to the following address via Speed Post/Courier, so as to reach before 1800 hrs on 9th November, 2017: The Project Manager–CMS, All India Management Association, Management House, 14, Institutional Area, Lodhi Road, New Delhi - , 110 003, India.
