Modem
To communicate between computers at long distance, a telephone line is used in a communication channel. Telephone line can transmit only analog signals. The computer communicates only in digital format. So signals have to be converted from digital to analog in the transmitting end and analog signals have to be converted to digital at the receiving end. This modulation and demodulation are performed by a device called modem. Modems are of two types. They are

Internal Modem:
A printed circuit card available inside the computer. Requires no extra power supply and serial port connection and cable.

External Modem:
A device that is connected externally to the computer by a cable.
