Overview National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the HRD Ministry, Government of India. The NIOS open schooling system provides learning opportunities to those who do not or cannot attend a regular educational institute. The reasons for not being able to do so could be financial or medical or any other reason. For such individuals, NIOS gives the freedom to study anytime, anywhere and appear for the requisite qualifying exam at their own convenience. This is made possible through the On-Demand Examination System (ODES), whereby you can select your date, time and exam centre as per the schedule of the public exam which is held twice a year. There is also a wide choice in selecting the writing medium for the exam as well as the medium of instruction for various courses.
NIOS courses range from the elementary level to the senior secondary level. Additionally, there are vocational education courses and Teacher education courses, as also in-service teacher training programs, literacy and training programs for health workers, neo-literates, etc.
Elementary Education courseNIOS offers Open Basic Education (OBE) courses at A, B and C level. This is equivalent to Classes III, V and VIII respectively.
Secondary Education courseThis is for Std.10, with 27 subjects offered in nine mediums. The subjects include 17 languages and 10 other subjects.
Medium of instruction options: Hindi, English, Urdu, Marathi, Telegu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Odia and Tamil.
Senior Secondary Education courseThis is for Std.12, with 25 subjects, including seven languages, offered in six mediums.
Medium of instruction options: Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati and Odia.
Credit accumulationTransfer of credits (ToCs) from any other recognized Board up to two subjects is allowed when applying for online admission for 10th and 12th Class students.
Admissions sessions NIOS offers 24x7 online admissions. Admission for Secondary (10th class) and Senior Secondary (12th class) is scheduled as per Streams and Blocks.
For Stream I, Block I, admission dates are between March and September of the current year, while for Block II it is between September of the current year and March of the following year. The first exam is generally scheduled in April of the next year.
Admission dates for Stream-II is generally in May to June, with the first exam in October of that year.
Vocational Education coursesThere are totally 96 vocational courses offered by NIOS. The vocational stream at the Senior Secondary level was launched in 2016 in these areas: Home Science, Agriculture & Animal Husbandry, IT/ITES, Electrical, Insurance, Financial Market, Retail, Ayurveda and Yoga.
NIOS offers a special scheme for ITI students, through which they will get credit transfer for three ITI courses and they need to pass two courses from NIOS to earn 10th and 12th certificates from the NIOS Board.
NIOS Vocational Training programsNIOS offers short-term skill training in communication and soft skills along with industry-specific internship. It has collaborated with various agencies and organizations to offer short-term vocational training and signed an MoU with the National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) to offer NOS-based NSQF (National Skills Qualifications Framework)-compliant courses.
NIOS in-service teacher training programsNIOS offers a Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) program, for untrained in-service teachers at the elementary level. To date, more than 23,000 teachers have registered for this program. NIOS also organized a Professional Development Program for Elementary Teachers (PDPET) for B.Ed. teachers in Himachal Pradesh.
NIOS programs for Army personnelNIOS offers a special scheme as per an MoU signed with the Indian Army, wherein Jawans who dropped out of school for any reason and were unable to complete their academic studies can complete Std.10 or Std.12 certification from NIOS.
NIOS programs for Neo-LiteratesNIOS has signed a MoU with the National Literacy Mission Authority to jointly conduct basic literacy assessment, which is conducted twice a year, in March and August. The assessment is done across India in 31 languages. An Equivalency Program is also offered for continuing education of neo-literates at the level of classes III, V and VIII (A, B and C level respectively).

This is the great information shared by the author and apart from it, the NIOS is also providing teacher training for those teachers who are working in various government and private schools without basic qualification on teaching. So on seeing this opportunity, the Telangana government is now insisting teachers across the state to avail the facility and do the teacher training program through NIOS and get the National certificate so that they can get right job at any government and good private schools. Henceforth teachers without basic teacher training programs may not be allowed to work.
