Network Interface Card (NIC)
Network Interface Card acts as a physical interface between the computers and the network cable. Network interface card manages the flow of information to and from the computer. The card is inserted into a slot inside each computer and server on the network. After installation of the card, the cable is attached to the card's port to make the connection between the computer and the network. The role of a network card is
(1) Translate data from the computer for the network
(2) Send data to another computer/device.
(3) Control the flow of data between computer and cabling system
(4) Receives data from the cable and translates for the computer.
(5) Converts parallel data to serial while sending and serial to parallel after receiving.
NICs must agree on
(1) The maximum size of the groups of data to be sent.
(2) The amount of data to be sent before confirmation of receipt is given.
(3) The time intervals between sending data chunks.
(4) The amount of time to wait before confirmation is sent.
(5) How much data each card can hold before it overflows.
(6) The speed of the data transmission.
