Back-up

The most important thing is to have a copy of the data to some other medium so that, it can be reinstalled or reused if any damage occurs to the original data. The copy made to prevent the loss of data is called backup. This loss of data happens only when a hard disk crashes. The backup can be made in floppies, magnetic tapes or on CD-RW. Floppies are not suitable for backing up huge amount of data.

Types of back-up

(1) Normal backup

Backs up regardless of file's archive. Clears the archive attribute assigned to each file while backing up.

(2)Incremental backup

Files having archive attribute enabled are only backed up. Copy only those files that have been changed after normal backup. If a backup is made again, copy only those files that have changed after the first incremental backup.
Each incremental backup must be stored on a separate medium.

(3) Differential backup

Copies only selected files that have changed after normal backup or incremental backup. Archive attribute flags of backed up files are not cleared. Hence two differential backups can be performed with the same results in two separate media.

(4) Daily backup

Copies files that have been changed daily without changing their archive attribute.

(5) Copy backup

Copies only selected files. Archive attribute is not changed.
