Motivation lies within you – recognize it!

How do you remain focused and motivated? Look within yourself to find ways to stay motivated. Motivation is an attitude that comes from within. You can do things better when you remain positive and focus on the right things. Here are five pointers to help you stay motivated.

Motivation is that one single factor that can lead you to success, in any field of your choosing. It is what makes people dream big and is what makes them work towards realising those dreams. Motivation is akin to a magical potion from which we derive inspiration and fuel, to accomplish our objectives. Motivation can make us aim for difficult and sometimes impossible goals. It has the power to turn our life around.

And yet, we finding motivation or remaining motivated to be one of life's biggest challenges. Most of us lack that will to strive, for we lack motivation. We pin our failures on others – on people and circumstances. Not once do we introspect to see that it was us who had gone wrong. We play the blame game, for it is so easy to play.

But, the blame game is unproductive. It does not help our growth. We lose confidence and harbour negativity. Failures always have a reason, yes there is no denying it. But, how and on whom do we pin the blame?

We need to evaluate everything that happens to us and attribute reasons to it, but, not before analysing our weaknesses and lack of interest. Doing so provides us with our daily dose of motivation.

Life is like a roller coaster ride, full of ups and downs. If there are obstacles and bad times there are also good times. Do not let impediments hinder your progress. You need to master the technique of weaving your way past all the stumbling blocks.

The motivation that you seek is within you. Stand up, take control of the situation and anchor yourself, when times get rough. Here are five motivational tips for you to follow -

Let go of your ego

Failures bring the worst out in us and make us frustrated and cranky. They make us shift the blame, for that is the easiest and most convenient thing to do, and in all this, we ignore our shortcomings.

It is natural to be disappointed. Losing out an opportunity can never be fun. But, do not stop with the feeling of resentment and disappointment – go a step beyond and reflect on the circumstances that led to your failure. You have to let go of your ego, for only then will you find answers and be able to take pragmatic decisions.

The gaping holes will become apparent when you start joining the dots. This exercise puts things into perspective – making you understand what you should have and should not have done. It would be wrong to suppress your guilt at this juncture, but instead of wallowing, make it work for you.

Turn the errors you committed and all the misjudgements that you made into a remedial lesson. Work to better yourself, so inadvertent failures can be avoided, in future. Make that your motivation.

Cloak yourself in positivity

Keep the company of positive people and think positive thoughts. Avoid the company of negative people and don't harbour negative thoughts, as they can gnaw at you and destroy you from within. Happy people spread cheer and immediately lift sagging spirits, while melancholic and forlorn people emit negative vibes that make you feel distraught.

Build a happy environment surrounded by things that give you pleasure - happy faces, plants, pets, children, music and people who believe in you. Also, bury all negative thoughts and nurture positive thoughts. The human brain imbibes from its immediate surrounding, absorbing both positive and negative emotions.

A happy environment creates a chemical reaction within the brain that causes it to release feel-good hormones. These hormones act as instant stress busters. They lift the mood and leave you pumped with renewed energy. You will feel reassured, motivated and ready to go.

It is a well-known fact that the human brain can work out complex problems more efficiently when the mind and body are relaxed. Stress has an adverse effect on the way we function, so avoid it like the plague. Find things that make you happy and send out positive vibes. They will help motivate you to put more effort in what you do.

Believe in yourself

There will always be people around you who will run you down through the resentful remarks and negative attitude. They will discourage you. And there will be occasions that will make you feel less competent.

How do you handle such situations? The answer lies in how much you believe in yourself. Do not let someone undermine your abilities or your drive to achieve things. Do not be heckled by naysayers. Remember, it is just them being good at what they are best. You should concentrate on your skills and your goals.

All said and done, it is your life, and you get to choose how you live it. Make informed choices by weighing the pros and cons of all your decisions. Let others say what they want. If you believe in your aptitude, it will be motivation enough to take on the world.

Find pleasure in what you do

Doing a job just because it needs to get done, can cause monotony. It will not excite you. You need to find pleasure in what you do. A 9-5 desk job may not enthuse you for long. Challenge yourself and learn new skills that can help you at work.

If there are limitations and restrictions at your workplace, look for ways to doing what you like outside of it. Only when you are happy will you be able to lead a fulfilling life. Cultivate a hobby and do things that give you pleasure. Do not become stuck in a quagmire, as it will suck you into a deep hole, leaving you frustrated with life. Explore what life has to offer and follow your dreams and passions. You will find solace and be in a positive frame of mind.

No pretences please

Stop pretending to be someone that you are not. You cannot please the world. Be content with who you are and what you are. It is good to change yourself, but do it for yourself, not to make an impression on others.

Do not let societal pressures define you. Change for the better, not to fit in, but to stand out. Learn to accept your physical attributes or the lack of them. Do not be overly concerned with your physical appearance as it can cause anxieties and demotivate you. It can cause you to lose self-confidence.

Be comfortable in your skin and strive to put your best foot forward. Once you feel good about who you are, you will find it easier to improve on other skills which will then complete you. If you focus on the superficial, you will find neither purpose nor achieve your goals. Set your priorities right, for doing so will help you stay motivated.
