NFAI-FTII Film Appreciation short-term summer course 2018 admissions


Are you looking for a career in film appreciation? Attend the summer short-term course in film appreciation at Pune, jointly organized by National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and Film & Television Institute of India (FTII). National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) are jointly offering a unique summer course in film appreciation in May-June this year at their Pune campus, Maharashtra. Those keen on getting admission to this full-time course should submit their application by 31st March 2018. Physically challenged people are welcome to apply. Those selected for admission to the course need to arrange for their own accommodation. The institute does not provide campus or outside accommodation for this course.

It should be noted at the outset that the course is neither related to film production nor does it include any script writing modules. The sole focus of the course is having a broad understanding of films. Also, no practical aspects are part of the curriculum.

About the course

Duration: 4 weeks, full time.

Dates: 7th May to 2nd June 2018.

Medium of instruction: Primarily English.

It is a course which would be valuable for educators who wish to launch a course related to film studies or introduce activities in this field in their institutions. Those who conduct in-depth research on movies, hosts of film clubs & societies and government officials responsible for handling films would also find this course worthwhile.



Course curriculum

The short-term film appreciation course will give you an in an all-inclusive, in-depth awareness and conception of the nature of cinema and its various related forms. Thus you will learn about the contemporary advancements vis-à-vis technological growth in terms of digital films, the making of independent films, etc. which form a part of today's media.

Your learning modules will include:
  • Detailed theory-based lessons on the history of cinema.

  • How movies advanced from a form of entertainment to becoming a channel of art and communication.

  • Cinematic genres.

  • Concepts of time, space and motion in films.

  • How film production developed over time and its seamless rapport with the medium of digital arts.

  • An analytical study of different forms of cinema, such as classics, non-fiction movies, short films, etc.

Eligibility criteria

The only eligibility requirement is that the applicant should have completed 18 years of age as on 1st April 2018.



Course fee

The total fee for the film appreciation course is Rs.20,000/-. This fee is required to be transferred via online mode on FTII Account No. MCA 65166250674 (IFSC Code - STBP 0000571) only after the selection for admission to the course is confirmed. The fee once paid will not be refunded.

How to apply

Download the application in the prescribed format which is available at the NFAI website and at the FTII website.

Send an advance copy of the completed application form via e-mail to: nfaipune@gmail.com.

Pay the administrative fee of Rs.700/- via online transfer on FTII Account No. MCA 65166250674 (IFSC Code - STBP 0000571). Your application for admission will be considered only on receipt of this administrative fee.

Send a hard copy of the application along with the UTR No. on or before 31st March 2018 to:

Important Notes

You need to paste one passport size photograph on the downloaded prescribed application form. Additionally, you need to attach two copies of the same photo with the application form.

In the application form, you have to enter personal details (name, address, contact info) along with academic & career details, nature of current work, etc. Further, you need to give the names of any three films which you liked and attach one page to the application form to express yourself in detail about those films.

It is also mandatory to attach a Statement of Purpose (SOP) which conveys the reasons for seeking to join the film appreciation course. The SOP should be between 800-1000 words. Your application will be rejected if the SOP is not submitted.
