Advantages and disadvantages of watermelon


In summer we all feel very thirsty and in turn needs more water to keep us hydrated. The watermelon contains a good quantity of water and other ingredients which are essential for our health. But it has some demerits also. In this article, I will discuss the advantages as well as disadvantages of this watermelon.

Introduction

The summer is catching up and the temperatures are on rising mode. In summer we require more water as the chances of dehydration are very high. All people start feeling more tired and thirsty. The watermelon is reliable fruit to prevent these problems. We see heaps of these fruits on the footpaths and people eating the cut slices on the roadside to keep their energy levels up.The watermelon can be mixed with other fruits to make a fruit salad. The juice of this fruit can be mixed with other fruit juices. A hundred grams of watermelon serve will provide about 30 calories only.

The watermelon and its constituents

The watermelon fruit contains rind (outer skin) in green or thick green color and inside there will be the flesh in many colors. But red color flesh is very famous. The fruit contains seeds also inside. The rind can also be eaten. But many people don't like the flavor and hence they will through away this. The seeds of watermelon can also be eaten. They can be dried, roasted and powdered to eat. In some countries, they eat these seeds on New Year day. A watermelon contains 90 to 92% water. It contains 6% sugar and many other ingredients. This fruit contains a good quantity of Lycopene, Citrulline, Vitamin A, B6 and C. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and help in protecting cells from damage. It gives a red color to the stuff in the fruit. This is also good for prevention of cancer. Citrulline is a naturally occurring amino acid and helps in increasing the amounts of required proteins.

  • This food is good for digestion as it contains some fibre and more water.


Health risks

Reasonable quantity of this food daily is good for health but too much consumption is not advisable. Excess intake of Lycopene may create indigestion. As per the experts' intake of 30mg of Lycopene per day is good for health.

Conclusion

Watermelon is the healthy food for us. This is tasty and in addition to that it is a very low-calorie food and improves our health condition. A controlled eating of this fruit will prevent us from Sunstroke.

The article explains benefits of watermelon very nicely. But today malpractice in the ripening of fruits is a major problem and injuries to our health. Sometimes, a taste of watermelon is doubtful when looking at the color of its inside stuff to be eaten. Vendors sometimes inject the color to the unripe watermelon.

Good article on watermelon and its uses. But how to choose a right watermelon is the greatest challenge for the house holds. There are two types of watermelons available in the market. One is dark green colour and other one with striped one. We do not know whether the fruit is fully grown or fully red inside. Some road side vendors who have the knack to identify the colour inside without even cutting open it , would chose such fruit and keep them cut open two halves so that the customers would tend to purchase the fruits without even asking to cut their fruit. Normally the total green watermelon are ripen when they are light in colour and the striped one can be identified with little yellowing stripes on them which ensures ripeness inside. So it takes challenge to select the right fruit before purchasing the watermelon.

Fruits are good for health and watermelon is no exception. The article has nicely brought out the advantage of eating this fruit especially in summer.

As a word of caution, I will like to mention that nowadays there is so much adulteration in the market that even fruits are being adulterated. Many fruits are being artificially polished using wax like chemicals which are harmful for health.

Watermelon is also being adulterated by injecting red color solution in it through syringes so that no physical marks are seen on its surface. Sometimes when you cut it, you see dark red colors accumulated in some areas which is a clear sign of adulteration. There is a lot of difference in taste also between a naturally riped red colored watermelon piece than that of the adulterated one.

We must be cautious against this adulteration when purchasing this big item and better cross question the shopkeeper and insist for cutting it before we accept it.
