Not only high-level professionals, but also many people working at middle-level and lower level positions in the private sector face the problem. Every time, when they leave a job and join a new organization, a new Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) account is opened. Many such employees withdraw the amount kept in old/previous accounts. Some even forget about previous accounts and the amount remains unclaimed. It is found that more than hundreds of crores are lying unclaimed in various EPF accounts. For the benefit of the individual, it is absolutely necessary to merge the EPF accounts. Fortunately, now the process has become simple and can be done online. In this article, the procedure to merge multiple EPF accounts of an individual is discussed in detail.

Detail procedure of linking multiple accounts

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has gone online to a large extent. The website of EPFO is www.epfindia.gov.in. Now it has become very easy to merge multiple EPF accounts of the same person provided the individual has already linked her AADHAR details and PAN number with his/her accounts.

The step-by-step procedure is mentioned below:-

  1. When an individual joins a new organization, a new EPF account is opened and the individual is allotted a UAN number. It is like an account number of a bank.
  2. The employee is then required to visit the EPF portal (https://unifiedportal-memepfoindia.gov.in/memberinterface/) and activate the UAN number. He/She should also update mobile number, AADHAR details and Know Your Customer (KYC) particulars, if not done by the office.
  3. After three days of activation of the new UAN number, the individual has to again visit the site. Thereafter he/she should go to 'Services' tab, click it and then click 'One employee-One EPF account' button.
  4. After clicking the button, he/she will find an online form. The employee is required to fill the form online and indicate the numbers of previous EPF accounts, which he/she wants to merge with the present account. The employee is required to submit the form online.
  5. On submission, he/she will receive an OTP in the registered mobile number.
  6. On submission of OTP and the necessary declaration, EPFO will merge the old accounts indicated in the online form, with the present account.

Points to be remembered

The concerned individual must remember that the process will be successful only if the AADHAR details and PAN number are already linked with the EPF accounts which are going to be merged. So, the individual must link AADHAR details and PAN card before initiating the process of merger/linking of accounts. Moreover, the process should be initiated at least three days after the activation of latest UAN number.

So, employees having multiple EPF accounts must merge these accounts without any delay. This is for the safety and saving of their own hard-earned money. The process has become simple and hassle-free. All people having multiple EPF accounts must take benefit of the present simplified system.
