About the Dept. of Music

The Music Centre of the University of Mumbai was established in 1969 and had a two year Diploma Course in Hindustani Vocal Classical Music. The centre was later expanded to the full-fledged Department of Music which, over the years, increased the number of courses. Students are not only provided with formal theoretical classroom lessons but also get the opportunity to attend lectures of visiting eminent music scholars as well as performances of reputed professionals in the field of music.

While theory classes are scheduled for Saturday, the practical classes for all the courses are organized in hourly batches from 12 noon to 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

An interesting opportunity for students is to be selected for the Inter-University Music Exchange Program. These students along with faculty will get to visit and perform at a three-day concert in the music department of another university. Similarly, the students and teachers from the Music Department of that University will come to the University of Mumbai.

Infrastructure & Facilities

The Department of Music has its own studio with high-quality sound equipment for the courses related to sound recording, music compositions and recording. It is in the studio that a student's performance is recorded and analyzed with feedback given for improvement.

An exhaustive informative article on music courses offered by Mumbai University.

Music is not like regular academic courses. It requires an aptitude and inclination towards it. I have seen people playing a song on a harmonium or a flute without seeing the musical notations or code. It is a talent which a few people inherit. They have a gift of recognising the notes, what it is and at which place in the octave it belongs.

In a nutshell, music is not the cup of tea for everyone. So those who have the required passion and aptitude and can do the necessary efforts to learn music can definitely try to enrol for these prestigious music courses offered by Mumbai University.
