Workshop On Developments in Biomass Derived Fuels and Other Renewable Energy Sources and Enhanced Energy Efficiencies in Power Generation and in Other Fuels. June 12-13, 2008 at IIT Delhi
PROGRAMME OVERVIEW, COVERAGE AND OBJECTIVES Oil prices have sky rocketed beyond $ 100/barrel. This has once again focused the world attention on the fact that Oil reserves are limited. Coal is a major fuel for power generation. In facts, fossil fuels supply almost 90% of primary energy in the world. There is a growing concern for mainly five things: (1) Growing interest of Business Organizations in Renewable Energy Sources to meet the rising Power Shortages, (2) Horrendous environmental effects due to rising CO2 emissions, (3) Rising oil, coal and other fossil fuel prices, (4) Developing shortage of limited good quality fossil fuels, (5) Fuel Cell Power Generation. Environmental damages due to the increasing combustion of fossil fuels is threatening the very existence of humanity. Whereas, the nations are concerned about their Energy Securities and maintaining economic progress, still the Energy – Environment – Ecology - Efficiency – Economics i.e, 5 Es are related. The world is looking towards the only hope i.e. Biomass and other Renewable Energy Sources for Power Generation and for supplies of fuels for transportation and other energy needs to take care of growing energy shortages and for sustainable development. The role of enhancement of efficiencies of energy and conservation ofenergy in the area of environmental conservation cannot be underemphasized.
The following topics would be covered. Developments in Renewable Energy Sources for Power Generation for replacement of fossil fuels. Photovoltaics based power generation Biofuels such as biodiesel Biomass derived fuels such as bio ethanol, biobutanol, biohydrogen etc. Biogas Engineering and Technology Switch over to hydrogen fuel Regenerable Energy Sources – Solar concentrators, Solar cookers, Solar hydrogen, Solar chimney etc., Geothermal, Tidal, Wave Energy, OTEC, Biomass Conversion Engineering, Mini-hydel, Microhydel etc. Power Generation through Wind Energy Enhancement of Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation measures. Fuel Cell Power Generation Knowledge Management for the sharing and Multiplication of the knowledge acquired – within Business Organizations (Energy Industries) Renewable Energy Sources and Future Fossil Fuels (Gas Hydrate, Shale Oil, Coal bed Methane etc. Energy from Wastes – Power Generation through incineration of Municipal Solid Wastes and Sanitary Landfills Gas Chemical Feedstocks from Biomass Biomass Gasifiers Bioconversion Engineering and Biotechnology.
