International Congress of Mathematicians
Hyderabad, India, 19-27 August 2010

Welcome
India has a long history of engagement with mathematics. Ancient India had made impressive progress in Algebra. The place value system with the use of zero for representing numbers is an Indian invention. Mathematicians working in Kerala (in the South West of India) had anticipated many ideas that lie at the base of Calculus, some two centuries before Newton. In the more recent past - in the twentieth century Ramanujan and Harish-Chandra blazed new trails in mathematics.

The Indian mathematical community is delighted at the opportunity we have been given to host an International Congress in this country. We look forward to a very exciting congress which would help us widen our mathematical horizon. We are happy to welcome you colleagues from around the world to the congress. We hope that you will also be able to savour some of the touristic delights our country offers.

Our Logo
The logo for ICM 2010 depicts the standard fundamental domain for the modular group SL(2,Z) acting on the upper half plane. The formula written along the circular arc is a famous conjecture of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan proved by Pierre Deligne in 1973. The quotation in Sanskrit at the bottom of the logo is from the Rig Veda an ancient Indian religious work dating back to more than 1000 years before the start of the Christian era. It translates as "May good ideas come to us from everywhere."

General Information
The venue of the ICM-2010 will be the Hyderabad International Convention Centre, a state of the art facility for holding large meetings such as ICM 2010. The City of Hyderabad (check this link for more information on Hyderabad) is accessible directly from some international airports in Europe right now and we expect from many more by 2010. A brand new international airport is to become operational in March this year (2008). The city is well connected both by air and surface to all the major metros in the country: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore.

The Congress is structured in the traditional manner with the main activity being the Plenary and Sectional invited lecturers, the sectional talks being held in 7 or 8 parallel sessions. Efforts will be made to avoid overlap of talks on closely connected themes that may fall in different sections. There will also be paper-reading and poster sessions as is usual. The Organisers will also arrange special events such as non-technical talks connected with promotion of mathematics as well as cultural programmes.

There will be satellite conferences associated with the congress in different locations in the country

Satellite Conferences
The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), which is the largest mathematical conference covering all areas of mathematics, is held once very four years. The next ICM will be held in Hyderabad, India during August 19 -27, 2010.

It is customary to organize several international conferences in emerging areas of mathematical research, close to the dates of the ICM, in the region where it is being held taking advantage of the presence of delegates to the ICM from all over the world. The Executive Organizing Committee (EOC) has set aside some funds for supporting such conferences held during August -September, 2010. Conferences receiving such support will be labelled "ICM Satellite Conferences" by the EOC and will be listed as such on the ICM 2010 web-site and a link will be provided to the conference web-site, if there is one. Conference organizers who may not need finacial support of the EOC may also apply for this listing and link provision.

The International Mathematical Union (IMU), which is responsible for the conduct of all ICMs, has designated 20 areas of mathematics in which parallel sessions would be held during ICM 2010. They are as follows.

1. Logic and Foundations, 2. Algebra, 3. Number theory, 4. Algebraic and complex geometry, 5. Geometry, 6. Topology, 7. Lie theory and generalizations, 8. Analysis, 9. Functional analysis and applications, 10. Dynamical systems and ordinary differential equations, 11. Partial differential equations, 12. Mathematical physics, 13. Probability and Statistics, 14. Combinatorics, 15. Mathematical aspects of computer science, 16. Numerical analysis and scientific computing, 17. Control theory and optimization, 18. Mathematics in science and technology, 19. Mathematics education and popularization of mathematics, and 20. History of Mathematics.

For a detailed description of these sections see the ICM 2010 conference web-site this document

Those who are interested in organizing satellite conferences in the areas mentioned above are encouraged to submit a proposal to the Subcommittee for Satellite Conferences, ICM 2010 containing the following information:

Title of the conference
Brief description of the theme and scope of the conference
Section(s) (see the IMU classification above)
Name of the organizer(s)
Affiliation(s)
Address for correspondence
Phone number(s)
Fax
e mail
Venue of the conference
Dates of the conference
Composition of the organizing committee
Probable list of invited speakers
Expected number of participants
Budget
Funds requested from the EOC, ICM 2010
Funds requested/available from other sources
Name, Designation and Address of the authority to whom funds should be sent in case the proposal is approved.
The proposals should be sent to

Professor S. Kesavan
Convenor, Committee for Satellite Conferences, ICM 2010
The Institute of Mathematical Sciences
CIT Campus, Taramani
Chennai -600 113. INDIA

and a soft copy (in PDF format) should also be sent via e mail to
kesh@imsc.res.in
so as to reach before September 30, 2008.
Organizers of conferences that have been short listed for financial support will be notified directly by the EOC, ICM 2010. The information will also be available at the ICM 2010 web-site (www.icm2010.org.in) by January 31, 2009.
