Top 5 stores in Chennai to buy organic produce

Are you looking for stores in Chennai that sell organic produce? There is probably an organic food outlet near you. Browse through this list of organic food supply stores in Chennai that source the produce from local farmers.

City dwellers find themselves starved for choices, especially when it comes to eating healthy. We tend to buy whatever is accessible, and most often the available choices aren't healthy options. The fruits, vegetables, grains and pulses and a lot of the other foodstuff that we regularly consume have high concentrations of chemicals and pesticides present in them – neither of which is good for us, in the long run.

Which is why I grew my own vegetables. What had started as a hobby, soon became a passion. I had fun growing my own vegetables and fruits, in the limited space that I had. I was even growing strawberries in containers.

It all stemmed from my wish to eat healthily. You probably want to change the way you eat, too. So, how about getting full control of what is stocked in your kitchen? Why not go organic!

What is organic food?

You probably know that organic food is good for you, as well as being good for the environment. Organic crops are made ready using traditional farming methods that are devoid of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Traditional methods make use of naturally available materials to act as pesticides and fertilizers. The crops aren't genetically modified either. This ensures that the end product is healthy and all natural, as nature intended it to be.

Genetically modified crops are big, bright and appealing to the eye because they are manipulated and engineered to grow a certain way, leading to many debates about the side-effects of such techniques. Giving a new meaning to the adage that not everything that glitters is gold!

Naturally, grown food is organic and undoubtedly better. And if you want to switch to eating organic food, you'll probably want to know where to source them. A number of farmer markets, selling organic foodstuff, operate in Chennai, and I am sure there is one that functions near you or at a comfortable drivable distance. So, get ready to explore and find out what you can buy and where you need to head.

A very elaborate, informative and nice article about organic food items available in some stores in Chennai.

It is true that organic food is now picking up very fast as people are becoming more and more conscious of their health but at the same time their are certain aspects which are necessary to keep in the mind while purchasing these items.

I believe that there are many stores which are selling adulterated organic items and one must be very careful and alert to purchase it only from a reputed and authentic store. Why I am emphasising it because there is a price differential and there are clever and timid business people always to take advantage of it.

Another thing is everyone can not afford these because of high prices. So they can very well switch to home gardening to reap the real benefits if not singly then on collective community basis.

I agree with you on all points, but one. It is brazenness and not timidness that makes people take advantage of buyers.

Yes, unscrupulous elements are present in every walk of life, and it is for the consumer to be vigilant. You see that is the whole purpose of this guide. It will help consumers identify authentic organic shops in Chennai.

Organic crops aren't genetically engineered or treated with chemical fertilisers to produce more yield. Organic farming produces less yield and hence is priced high. Home gardening is a viable alternative, only as long as organic farming methods are practised.

We had a community vegetable garden in our society, but there is a downside to such projects. A few people grabbed veggies from the vegetable patch, on a daily basis, leaving nothing for the other residents.

Very well clarified and well explained. I appreciate that.

I will like to add further that the aggressive business entities are taking this opportunity to cash in many other products which become quite lucrative when they get a stamp of organic on their packing covers.

For example tea, milk, jaggery, basil, spices and many more such items are already under the brisk trading. More are likely to join the wagon.

I do not know what is the present governance of monitoring such aggressive and massive business actions in our country but certainly more vigil at the monitoring authority level as well as at the customer level is a prerequisite for quality control of these materials.
