The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has announced the schedule for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Fellowships 2018 for students who are studying Basic Sciences to pursue a research career in Science. The Fellowship program will be organized and managed by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. There will be special committees to oversee the efficient implementation of the program.

Fellowship features

The Basic Sciences' courses for which the Fellowship is applicable are: B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science.

As a Fellowship awardee, you can get direct access to National Laboratories/Universities who have agreed to extend special privileges like the library, laboratory facilities, etc. to KVPY Fellows on the production of an ID card. This ID card will be issued by KVPY to all Fellows under the program.

The amount is as follows:
  1. For Streams SA/SX/SB: The monthly fellowship is Rs.5,000/- and the annual contingency grant is Rs.20,000/- during the first to third years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Integrated M.Sc./M.S.


  2. For Streams SA/SX/SB: The monthly fellowship is Rs.7,000/- and the annual contingency grant is Rs.28,000/- during the M. Sc. / fourth to fifth years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat.

If you opt out of the basic science stream at any stage, then you will immediately forfeit the Fellowship and Contingency Grant.

The Fellowship can be continued/renewed provided you continue to have a good academic record with a first class or 60% marks in aggregate (50% for SC/ST/PWD students) or equivalent grade points. You will also have to pass all the subjects prescribed for that particular academic year & score the required percentage of marks. Further, it is also mandatory to participate & have a satisfactory performance in the summer camp in the first year and a summer project every year thereafter for renewal of the fellowship.

Students are eligible to receive the KVPY fellowship up to the pre-Ph.D. level or five years, whichever is earlier.

Note that if you have received any other fellowship or scholarship, then you will have to relinquish it if you wish to avail the KVPY Fellowship.



Eligibility criteria

The KVPY Fellowships are open to Indian nationals. However, as per the ruling of the Honorable High Court, Karnataka, for this academic year it is also open to students who are Person of Indian Origin (PIO)/Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) students. You cannot apply, though, if you are planning to study or are already studying an undergraduate program through Distance Education mode/correspondence course of any university.

The eligibility requirements for the three streams are as follows -

For Stream SA

You should be currently enrolled in Class XI in Science subjects of the academic year 2018-2019. You should have obtained a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects in the Class X Board exam (65% for SC/ST/PWD students).

The fellowship will be effective once you join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences for the academic year 2020-2021 after having obtained a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in Science subjects in the Class XII Board exam (50% for SC/ST/PWD students). During the interim period of one year, you will be attending the National Science (Vijyoshi) Camp, for which travel expenses and local hospitality will be met by KVPY.

For Stream SX

You should be enrolled in Class XII/ (+2) (Science subjects) during the academic year 2018–2019 and seek admission to an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences. These are: Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. for the session 2019–2020.

You should have obtained a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class X Board Exam (65% for SC/ST/PWD) and a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class XII Board Exam (50% for SC/ST/PWD).

If you are a student in the second year of study in the Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in the Academic year 2018-2019, then you are eligible to apply provided you have secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class X Board Exam.

You must also score at least 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class XII Board Exam before taking up the fellowship.

For Stream SB

You should be enrolled in the first year of an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. during the academic year 2018–2019.

You should have scored a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the Class XII Board Exam. In the first year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. you must have scored at least 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship.

Note that additional Fellowships are available also exclusively for the students belonging to SC/ST community and some for students under the category of Persons With Disability (both, physically and visually challenged).

Selection process

Based on the applications & eligibility requirements being met, students have to appear for a computer-based Aptitude Test at centres in various parts of the country. The test will be conducted both in Hindi and English on 4th November 2018 (Sunday). The test is to assess factual knowledge & analytical abilities. It will be based on the syllabus up to class X/XII/first year of the Basic Science courses of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int.M.Sc./M.S. as applicable. To practice, a mock aptitude test will be available at the KVPY website.

The Admit Card for the test can be downloaded from the website from the second week of October 2018.

For the test:
In addition to the Admit card, you must bring a valid School/College ID or Aadhar Card or Passport with a clear photograph. Without the Admit Card and valid ID, you will not be allowed to appear for the aptitude test. You should be present at the exam centre at least one hour before the test begins. Virtual calculators will be available on the computer screen and sheets of paper for rough work.

The exam time is as follows –
(i) For Stream SA: 9.30a.m. to 12.30noon. Reporting time is 8.30a.m.
(ii) For Stream SB/SX: 2p.m. to 5p.m. Reporting time is 1p.m.

How to apply

You must apply online only at the KVPY application portal . There are no hard copies of the application forms. Also, multiple applications in bulk through a school or college authority is not allowed. Check the official notification to know the documents required for uploading during the online application procedure.



Important Dates

  1. Online application begins: 11th July 2018.

  2. Last date to submit online application: 31st August 2018.

  3. Download of Admit Card: Second week of October 2018 onward.

  4. KVPY Aptitude Test: 4th November 2018.
