Review of Hindi Movie 'Sanju'

The hindi movie 'Sanju' based on the past life of cine star Sanjay Dutt is doing very good at the box office and has attracted the attention of movie goers. A review of this movie is done in this article.

Introduction

The film producers/ Directors are always in hunt of interesting plots for making a film and if the direction, cinematography and acting of the actors is good, the film becomes hit and in turn gives good return to the producer, director and the actors.

The recent hindi movie Sanju is also one of such films which is not only being discussed in so many social media but also has become an instant hit with the viewers and in the first three days itself has able to collect and crossed the mark of staggering Rs 100 crores. The film is based on the past life of cine star Sanjay Dutt who had been in the media for various reasons and controversies and had to be in jail for quite a significant time. Though all the cast and crew have worked magnificently but the acting of Ranbir Kapoor as 'Sanju' is remarkable and being quoted as superb by the public.

Cast and Crew

The film is directed and produced by Rajkumar Hirani who is well known for his earlier films - Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots and PK. Ranbir Kapoor is in the lead role of Sanju. Paresh Rawal is in the role of Sanju's father that is Sunil Dutt. The role of Saju's mother Nargis Dutt is played by Manisha Koirala. Dia Mirza has been given the role of Sanju's wife - Manyata.

Other important roles are Sanju's friend Kamlesh played by Vicky Kaushal and role of an established writer Winnie to whom Sanju approaches for his biography, is played by Anushka Sharma. All these actors have done their part well especially the role of Sanju by Ranbir Kapoor is worth mentioning as he has combined the humour with drama very effectively.

Plot of the Film

The Director has tried to depict the past life of Sanju in a dramatic way and in the opening scenes of the movie, Sanju is shown searching for a writer for writing his life story so far before surrendering to the court in connection with the arms act case. He rejects one film writer and then settles for an established writer Winnie (Anushka Sharma) to pen his biography. He recollects and narrates to Winnie all about his life so far. He even confesses his intimate details of past life. This part of the film is very interesting as the ups and downs of Sanju's life so far are presented vividly.

The relation of Sanju with his parents and the sentimental situation between him and his father are well depicted by the Director. The emotions and deep bond between the two is shown in a very professional way and effects the senses of the audience. His wife Manyata (Diya Mirza) is present everywhere in the story. His best friend Kamlesh (Vicky Kaushal) is also shown in the movie to stand aside him all the times as a real friend who can do anything for him.The narration of past life is long but gripping. The scenes where Sanju is under the spells of drugs are very well presented and are a good cinematic experience for the viewers. Still, there are certain events and happenings in Sanjay Dutt's life which are not given importance and not presented in the picture and the viewer miss them as these were much popular in the media and are still in the memory of the public. Anyway, Directors have a commercial angle as well as other boundaries for presenting a story and it is their prerogative to choose some parts as more important than others.

In this film the Director has presented the image of Sanjay Dutt as a man who is struggling to fight with his inner demons and trying to be a gentleman and wants to show that he was in a trap and now is desperately trying to come out of it.

General Analysis

Ranbir Kapoor has done excellently and handled the emotions and moods in the best of artistic forms and established his acting beyond doubt. In fact all the actors in the film have done their part well and that is the reason that it has been liked by the public instantly after its release. The media hype about the life of Sanja Dutt is also a contributing factor.

The music by AR Rahman, Rohan-Rohan and Vikram Montrose is successful in setting the mood right. The overall direction and cinematography of the film is very good.

Conclusion

It is a difficult task to make a biopic type movie on the life of a controversial cine star especially who has been in jail for quite sometime but the Director Hirani has really done his home work well and produced a picture which became instant hit on its release. There are always apprehensions when one chooses such subjects or plots for making a commercial movie.

From entertainment point of view the movie is well made and worth watching.
