The Institute Vast changes are observed in every sphere of life in today"s world. In view of the changing health care needs of the society, in general and in view of the hospital service requirement in particular, the Nitte Education Trust decided to start a professional nursing institute and thus, evolved the Nitte Institute of Nursing Sciences in the year 1992.
The Nitte Institute of Nursing Sciences began both the School of Nursing (SON) with an intake of 27 students and College of Nursing (CON) with 6 students at the Padmashree Hospital, Nanthoor. The founder principal of SON was Mrs. Mable Alexander while Ms. Lt. Col. Manjusha Chakraborthy was the founder principal of CON. In 2001, the Institute shifted to its own campus at Paneer, about 2 kms from the Medical Sciences Complex at Deralakatte. The Institute was renamed as Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences in memory of late Dr.(Mrs.) Usha Punja, in the year 2002.
The Institute offers a 3 year diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) under the Karnataka State Diploma in Nursing Examination Board (KSDNEB), Bangalore and a 4 year bachelors degree program affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore. The Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the Karnataka Nursing Council (KNC).
