CAT 2018 online registrations open for IIMs admissions

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) has announced the schedule for the computer-based Common Admission Test 2018 (CAT 2018).

About CAT-2018

The Common Admission Test 2018 (CAT 2018) is mandatory for seeking admission to various Post Graduate and Fellow programs of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The scores you get in CAT-2018 are allowed to be used by listed non-IIM member institutions as well. However, the IIMs will not play any role in the selection process of non-IIM institutions.

The IIMs are at: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Bodh Gaya, Calcutta, Indore, Jammu, Kozhikode, Kashipur, Lucknow, Nagpur, Rohtak, Raipur, Shillong, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Tiruchirappalli, Udaipur, Visakhapatnam.

CAT-2018 will be scheduled on the same date, that is 25th November 2018, in test centres across India, in 147 cities. You can select the option of any four cities in order of preference.

The duration of the test will be 180minutes. There will be three sections:
  1. Section I: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension.
  2. Section II: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.
  3. Section III: Quantitative Ability.

You will be allotted 60 minutes for answering in each section. Note that you cannot switch from one section to another in-between. Some of the questions may not be of a multiple-choice type, but those for which you have to type the answers directly on the screen. A basic screen calculator will be provided for computation. A tutorial explaining the format will be available from 7th October 2018.



Eligibility requirements

In order to register for CAT-2018, you must fulfil the below mentioned eligibility criteria. However, this will not ensure consideration for shortlisting by IIMs.

You must have a Bachelor's Degree with minimum 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) from a recognized University or educational institution or an equivalent qualification which is recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

You can also register for CAT-2018 if you are appearing for the final year of Bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification exam, have completed the requisite degree requirements and are awaiting results. However, you will be allowed to join the program provisionally, only on submission of a certificate from the Principal/Registrar of your University/Institution (issued on or before the date as stipulated by the respective IIM) stating that you have completed all the requirements for obtaining the Bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification on the date of the issue of the certificate.

Any one of the following criteria is to be fulfilled-
  1. Completed Bachelor's degree with the required percentage of marks.
  2. Completed professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA) with required percentage.
  3. Should be in the final year of Bachelor's degree with required percentage.

There will be reservation of seats for various categories of applicants as follows-
  • 15% for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
  • 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
  • 27% for Other Backward Classes candidates belonging to the "non-creamy" layer (NC-OBC)

Registration fees

For SC, ST and PwD category candidates, the fee is Rs.950/-. For all other categories of candidates the fee is Rs.1,900/-.

You need to pay the registration fee only once, irrespective of the number of institutes to which you apply. The fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances.

The CAT 2018 payment partners are BillDesk, PayU and PaytM. On the online payment page, you can select the option to make the payment for the exam.

How to apply

First you need to ensure that you have a valid email account and a mobile phone number which you need to maintain throughout the selection process.

After filling in all the requisite details, make the online payment. On successfully doing so, you will see the message "Payment Successful" on the screen along with the Payment Transaction Number. You will then be redirected to the CAT 2018 website.

You will also receive a confirmation email stating the successful submission of your CAT 2018 Application within a few minutes. The email may also contain communication on additional details such as Admit Card download window.

After results

The list of candidates who are shortlisted for the next level of selection will be uploaded on the websites of the respective IIMs, who will directly send interview letters to those candidates. Note that the criteria for shortlisting are different for each IIM, such as academic performance, work experience, etc. Hence, you need to visit the specific IIM's website where you seek admission to know the criteria.

The second stage of the selection process may include Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI).

If you are shortlisted for an interview, you need to submit the following documents for the process of eligibility verification:
  1. All the mark sheets as well as attested copies.
  2. If selected for a program at an IIM, the original degree certificate and mark sheets of all semesters/years along with attested copies of these must be submitted for verification at the time of joining the program.
  3. SC, ST, NC-OBC and PwD candidates must show the original caste/class and/or disability certificate and also submit a photocopy at the time of interview along with the submission requirements as specified in "Mark Sheets and Degree Certificate" section.
  4. Those appearing for the final bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification exam must show an original certificate from the Principal/Registrar/Director of the university/Institution certifying that you have obtained 50% marks or equivalent (45% for SC, ST, and PwD candidates) based on latest available grades/marks. You must submit an attested copy of the original certificate at the time of interview.

Note: The deadline for submission of the mark sheet and the certificate is 31st December 2019. If this condition is not fulfilled, then the provisional admission will be automatically cancelled. Provisional admission will also be cancelled if it is found that the certificate is found to be incorrect subsequently.



Important dates

  • Registration begins from: 8th August 2018.
  • Registration ends on: 19th September 2018, 5p.m.
  • Download Admit Card: 24th October 2018 to 25th November 2018.
  • CAT-2018 Test date: 25th November 2018, in two sessions.
  • Date of results: Second week of January 2019 (tentative date).
