  • Students cannot work till the session begins. For example, if your course begins on January 2-17 and you reach Australia in December 2016, you cannot take up employment till the session begins.

  • Students who fall under the post-graduate research sector can work for endless hours when the research work or doctoral thesis starts. Also, if in case there are preliminary courses that a student has enroll into, the student then becomes eligible to work for the 40 hours per fortnight rule, which is mentioned above.


  • Now, if a student works is a normal part of the curriculum course then this limit does not apply. It is usually applicable in situations of compulsory internships of integrated courses.


  • Another important thing to note is that if a student applies under the category post graduate research sector and is taking a preliminary course, they are eligible to work just for 40 hours in a fortnight during the duration of the course he has enrolled in. In this case, the student is allowed to work for unlimited hours only when his research course begins.


  • It is compulsory for students to apply for and avail a Tax File Number to work part-time in Australia. Being an international student, with a foreign passport, you can apply for a TFN online form to their official website.
