MY1002 CASTING DESIGN
1. CASTING DESIGN CONSIDERATIIONS Functional design – simplification of foundry practice, metallurgical design- Economic considerations. Design for sand moulding – parting lines, moulding and coring, redesigning to simplify moulding, draft, Investment casting mould design. 2. DESIGN PROBLEMS INVOLVING THIN AND UNIFORM SECTIONS Advantages and limitations of thin film sections, Non- uniform wall thickness, chilling effect of mould, good casting design for sound castings, Functional requirements for uniform sections, requirements for flow and feed paths, sand shell mould, permanent mould and investment castings.
3. DESIGN PROBLEMS INVOLVING UNEQUAL SECTIONS Production problems with unequal sections; padding, feed paths in permanent mould and investment castings. Design problems involving junctions.
4. INFLUENCE OF JUNCTION ON METAL SOLIDIFICATION AND QUALITY Effect of fillets, defects at junctions l junctions, T junctions, V junctions, X junctions, Y junctions, design for eliminating defects, junctions and renting. Causes of distortion and design remedies – design for obtaining uniform cooling.
5. DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES AND DESIGN FOR ECONNOMY Different factors that affect dimensional variations in sand castings, dimensional variations in shell mould, ceramic mould, permanent mould, plaster mould and investment castings, influence of tolerance modification on casting cost. Function of dimensions and tolerance, good casting design for simplification of inspection and machining. General considerations, factors that affect the casting cost, designing cost, designing to reduce the overall cost of production of quality castings. TEXT BOOK 1.
