Constitution of India gave women equal rights with men from the beginning. Unfortunately, women in this country are mostly unaware of their rights because of illiteracy and the oppressive tradition. Families are far less likely to educate girls than boys, and far more likely to pull them out of school, either to help out at home or from fear of violence. Women are both abused as well as revered in the Indian society; sometimes within the same household. The conditions of divorced women, widows, and unmarried working women need substantial improvement. Despite all development measures and constitutional and legal guarantees leading to betterment of the social and economic life of women, their educational advancement and improvement in their participation rate in the national life of the country, women still lag far behind men almost all the sectors including education. Womanhood should not be restricted to the kitchen. Empowering women, who are the backbone of our economy, is a sure path to achieve major economic gains.
