Stress can be defined as the pressure that an individual experiences. The stress can provide a positive effect or a negative effect. Stress causes some people to break and others to break records. E.g. of a positive effect is an artist performing better when someone very important is watching him. In the negative effect an example would be a player of high profess performing poorly under pressure. Some bad effects that negative stress can have are migraine headaches, heart problems and mental illness. Ways to reduce stress:
Developing the right perspective: Some people are able to avoid stress by maintaining a proper perspective. Earle defined perspective as " The ability to see the present moment and immediate events against the background of a large reference." People get stressed out for even minor things. E.g. When the vehicle breaks down and we can't repair it we may feel as if we are helplessly stranded and there is no way out. We may start thinking all the negative effects this will lead to. But instead if one kept a cool head taking it in the right perspective and just enquired with someone and found a mechanic some solution is bound to occur.
Facing the risks: Life is filled with risks. One can’t just run away from risks. When one tries to run away from risk he is actually trying to runaway from life. There is risk in all aspects of life. When we try for a job we risk not getting a job. Just because we fear losing in an interview, we can't just avoid all the interviews that come our way. Expect the best and that is what we will probably get.
Going by our strengths: People who work in their areas of stress are less affected by stress even when they make mistakes. When mistakes we make challenge us rather than stress us, then they are our strong areas. When a man is not doing good in academics but is a very good athlete he should focus on this strength which will ultimately lead to success.
Avoiding the Rat race: Rat race is the intense competitive struggle between people. In this environment success is determined by the personal wealth and acquisition that one gains over another. The trouble with this is that it is a never-ending process. Here a person is subjecting himself to unnecessary stress by not focussing on his individual goals. So he will never attain satisfaction as anyone who is driven by personal desire never gets satisfied.
Avoiding overload: We keep taking responsibilities one by one until we can handle no more and this causes stress. At times we have to be choosy as to what we can do because we have to do effective jobs rather than just good jobs. We have our own limits and should avoid the overload on us.
Developing strong convictions : Idle mind is devil's workshop. Lack of purpose and direction is very common these days. People have the feeling of boredom, which makes them feel ill and unhappy. People no longer what they believe. Conviction is very important necessity in life. With conviction a person can face any situation without fear and with dignity. With the extent of conviction grows the strength of a person and the stress automatically decreases.
Little compromise: People are entitled to certain rights . When they don’t get these rights they get stressed out and frustrated. It is not always possible to get all the rights. One should have the mentality of 'It is better to be the giver rather than the receiver. This so-called compromise will enable overcome the stress.
Choosing the right input to the mind: What you think is what comes out as what you experience. When you watch all horror movies in the night the mind gets filled with the fearful emotions which will definitely impact the life in one way or other. The way in which we act depends on what we hear, what we see and what we think. One should avoid the negative things that will induce stress. The mind is constantly undergoing programming and we have to choose the right input for our mind.
Changing focus: When focus on self is too much the stress is also too high. To avoid this we can try to help out others, which will reduce our self-focus and ease out the stress.
Letting out one's feelings: We should not keep all our feelings within ourselves. This could in the long run affect the health. So people should let out their feelings with someone close to them whom they can totally be honest with.
Change : When we get stressed out we need some change, which will reduce the stress, accumulated. A break during office hours is a welcome change. Games and entertainment are also excellent stress relievers.
