Short Term Course On Recent Advances In RF Techniques For Wireless Communication July 01 - July 12, 2008
Organized by Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur - 721 302
Objectives and Introduction Proliferation of wireless systems in every facet of polity is no more a new phenomenon, it is happening for last three decades. However, what is new is the emergence of wireless systems employing RF and microwave design philosophy. Wide area coverage Cellular systems, Wireless LAN and myriads of other wireless systems are coming to the market every now and then. To conform them to uniform standards, several wireless standards like WIMAX, EVDO, LTE etc are being defined. New design approaches like EMI/EMC design and MMIC design. were haunting the computer hardware industry for quite some time. Not only the scientists working for Indian Defence and Space programmes, even the Telecommunication circuit and system designers are now requiring manpower trained in these RF and microwave design techniques. So, a national need exists for training educators and practicing engineers the underlying principles of modern wireless system design.
Scope of the Short Course The short term course will focus on these emerging areas of Wireless systems with an emphasis on the fundamentals of RF and microwave Theory and Techniques. Apart from covering the fundamentals, the course will cover the key technologies of WIMAX, LTE and EVDO standard, antenna and transreceiver design principles for wireless systems and EMI/EMC issues concerning wireless system design. The theoretical lectures would be supplemented with rigorous hands-on-training on Microwave design, microwave measurement and Electromagnetic simulation tools required for wireless systems design. The course faculty would be chosen from the experts from IITs and other reputed research institutions of India working in the field of RF and WIRELESS system design for several decades.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (commonly known as IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP) is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education founded by the Government of India in 1951. The first of the seven IITs to be established, it is officially recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India and is regarded as one of the best engineering institutions in world. IIT Kharagpur was established to train scientists and engineers after India attained independence in 1947. It's organisational structure as well as its undergraduate admission process is shared by sister IITs. Among all IITs, IIT Kharagpur has the largest campus (2,100 acres), the most no. of departments, and the highest student enrollment.
The activities of Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell were initiated in 1998 in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur with an aim to work in the areas of Space Technology. The research in communications area extends to the areas of RF planning and design, Antennas, EMI/EMC and ESD.
Kharagpur Kharagpur is an important Railway junction and it is well connected to almost all parts of the country. Kharagpur, 116 Km. west of Kolkata, is two hours motor drive from Kolkata and also is connected to Howrah by frequent local trains. The Institute is about 5 Kms. away from Kharagpur Railway Station. Taxis, Auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws are available as transport.
Accommodation Limited shared accommodation in the guesthouses is available. Efforts will be made to book accommodation in the guesthouses on receiving request from the participants, on first cum first served hasis.
