TAMBARAM: In a measure aimed at discouraging visitors to the beachfront from venturing deep into the sea, the police have installed warning boards at a few places near Neelankarai. Police officials of Adyar district said about a dozen spots were identified between Kottivakkam and Muthukadu that come under the jurisdiction of Neelankarai police station’s limits.

The warning boards had been installed in three places so far.

Cases of drowning and other untoward incidents in the jurisdiction of Neelankarai police station – covering nearly 20 km from Kottivakkam – were always a matter of concern to the police administration and the latest initiative was expedited following a drowning incident a couple of days ago.

The Neekankarai police said they had installed the boards as part of awareness campaigns considering that several thousands flocked the beachfront between Kottivakkam and Muthukadu every evening.

An important reason why a large number of people come here was stringent policing at the Marina and Elliot’s beach, personnel of Adyar district said.

The other initiatives included highlighting the dangers of entering the water and posting of police pickets in some of the most dangerous spots and beat marshals. Horse-mounted policemen could not be deployed considering the distance, a senior police officer said.
