It's the middle of May, and summer in India is back with a bang. After a season of pleasant winter, its time once more to adjust ourselves to the sweltering heat and rising mercury levels. Being a tropical country, summers in India can be particularly severe in nature, with temperature levels breaching the forty degree Centigrade mark in many places. It is not uncommon to see people in India falling prey to heat related diseases every year, and one needs to be extra careful while travelling outside in summer. In this article, we offer you some cool tips to beat the heat and stay healthy.
To avoid falling ill in summer, it is very important to avoid the direct rays of the sun. Avoid going out during the daytime, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Try to schedule your work in the mornings and in the afternoon, when the temperature levels are usually lower. In case you need to travel during the noon, always carry an umbrella to shelter yourself from the scorching sun. Make sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before going outdoors. It is advisable to use a sunscreen even if you're wearing makeup with sun protection. Studies reveal that a foundation's sun protective value lasts only about two hours.
Apart from sunscreens, physical blockers such as zinc and titanium also offer protection against UVB and UVA, the forms of solar radiation that damage skin the most. These creams are available today in colourless bases, and can be used to effectively block out harmful radiations. Wearing a hat and using wraparound sunglasses also offer additional protection to the face and eyes. Remember, ultraviolet radiation causes skin cancer in human beings.
Choosing the right clothes also goes a long way in beating the excessive heat of summer. Wear light coloured, loose fitting, tightly woven fabrics as these will keep you cool and comfortable even in hot, humid conditions. Drink lots of water throughout the day as this will help you in replenishing the lost fluid of your body. Having frequent showers can also help you in beating the heat. If you work in an air-conditioned environment, do not venture directly into the sun. Spend a few minutes in the shade and acclimatize yourself with the external environment. Last but not the least, avoid junk and exposed street food. Germs spread fast in hot, humid conditions. However, with a little awareness, one can easily avoid falling ill in summer. Follow the tips, stay fit and enjoy the season.
