About IBM Academic Initiative Program:
Launched in 2004, the IBM Academic Initiative is an innovative program that addresses this need by partnering with colleges and universities to better educate millions of students for a more competitive information technology (IT) workforce. Through this initiative, IBM works closely with schools that support open standards and seek to use open source and IBM technologies for teaching purposes, both directly and virtually via the web. IBM is already working with more than 2 M students to build technology and science skills through the IBM Academic Initiative. The Academic Initiative includes an online portal that provides access to software, hardware, training and course materials, most at no charge. Through the web site, IBM offers hundreds of resources for integration into college curricula to help teach students how to master the fast-growing market of open technologies. IBM is interested in ensuring that colleges and universities produce technical professionals that graduate with open standards skills and that can succeed against today’s IT integration challenges. Universities provide excellent learning environments, but find it difficult to teach students about an IT transformation in progress unless those driving the transformation –-- IT companies at the helm of transformation--- provide real-time inputs and support. This paradigm gives birth to the IBM Academic Initiative, a global model of partnership between industry and academia to drive evolving open standards-based IT skills The Great Mind challenge promotes students from engineering colleges from across India in their endeavor to develop solutions, for real-time problems and scenarios using IBM open source software. It is aimed to encourage students who aspire to make key contributions to develop applications on cutting-edge IBM technologies while providing them with an opportunity to improve their software writing skills. With the formation of the IBM Academic Initiative, IBM partners with institutions that support open standards and seek to use open source and IBM technologies for teaching purposes, to better educate millions of students for a more competitive information technology (IT) workforce and also the need for companies to collaborate with academia to nurture IT talent - Drive IT to smaller towns The THEME for Challenge in 2008 is “Search for XML SUPERSTAR”. This will enable participants to get a hands-on experience on IBM software products, namely (Tivoli, WebSphere Application Server/ WebSphere Application Server Community Edition, DB2/DB2 Express-C, WebSphere Portal and Forms and Rational) and Eclipse which is Open Source on a Linux platform.
