Australian War Memorial Australian War Memorial, Canberra, a national war memorial, museum, art gallery, and research centre, opened in 1941, that records and commemorates the participation of Australia in armed conflicts, including World Wars I and II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Gulf War, and commemorates the 102,000 Australians who died on military service during these and other conflicts. Prominent campaigners for the creation of such a museum included the journalist and historian Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean (1879-1968). The war memorial was unveiled in 1929 and the museum itself opened in 1941. The Australian War Memorial is one of the country's most visited museums. The institution contains a large and varied collection of documents and objects, including biplanes from World War I, a Spitfire fighter plane from World War II, and a Japanese midget submarine which entered Sydney Harbour in 1942. There are also works of art and objects associated with wars in which Australia has been involved; dioramas of historical battles; documentary and audio-visual records; and photographs, maps, film, and sound recordings. It is also the repository of operational records of the Armed Forces of Australia.
