Chartres Cathedral
Chartres Cathedral, the cathedral church of Notre Dame, Chartres, north-western France, among the most famous religious monuments in the world and unique among French cathedrals for its wealth of sculpture and stained glass. The greatest figure in the history of Chartres was Bishop Fulbert, an internationally famous scholar and thinker who began building the cathedral (on the site of an ancient place of worship, formerly pagan) in the 11th century. Fulbert's cathedral was later destroyed by fire and rebuilding began towards the end of the 12th century, continuing in earnest for 60 years. The most prominent of later additions is the north-west spire, the Clocher Neuf, completed in 1513 and balancing the earlier spire (completed in 1160). The interior is notable for its harmony and happy proportions, though most of the original fittings have been lost. (The rood screen was demolished in the 18th century.) The west front, with its so-called “Royal Portal”, is rich in sculpture of the mid-12th century. The central portal contains a magnificent relief of Christ in Majesty. The portal of the south transept (c. 1224-1250) depicts scenes from the New Testament—the Last Judgement is graphically shown. The corresponding portal to the north transept is dedicated to the Old Testament and the coming of Christ. The sculpture showing the Creation is of particularly striking quality. In all, there are more than 2,000 carved figures forming an iconographic programme of unparalled completeness. There are more than 150 windows containing medieval glass, largely 13th century in date and stunning in their effect.

Chartres Cathedral is one of the most splendid Gothic cathedrals in France. It was begun in the late 12th century, although the north-west spire was not added until the 16th century. The cathedral is particularly rich in sculpture and stained glass. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
