Humber Bridge

Humber Bridge, single-span suspension bridge spanning the Humber Estuary in eastern England, situated about 8 km ( 5 mi) west of Hull. Construction of the bridge began in 1972 and took nine years. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on July 17, 1981. The total length of the bridge is 2,220 m (7,284 ft) with a main span of 1,410 m (4,626 ft). The span is supported by a reinforced concrete tower at each end; this was the first time reinforced concrete had ever been used for such towers instead of steel. The bridge has two dual-lane carriageways, and a pathway on either side for pedestrians and cyclists. The Humber Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world (overtaking the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York) until 1998, when the Storebælt and Akashi Kaikyo bridges were completed in Denmark and Japan respectively.

Humber Bridge

The Humber Bridge spans the River Humber and is situated around 8 km (5 mi) from the centre of the port of Hull. From 1981 until 1998 the suspension bridge was the longest in the world, with a main span of 1,410 m (4,626 ft).
