Course overview : Genetics has always been a very important aspect of Biology and has become particularly topical with the recent completion of the Human Genome Project. Our Genetics course combines particularly well with Medical Biology which involves the study of a wide variety of disciplines including cell biology, biochemistry, histology, immunology, microbiology and genetics. It allows you to explore the full breadth of Genetics whilst placing particular emphasis on health and disease. This makes it a challenging, yet fascinating subject of study. This degree pathway takes you from the basics which underpin the subject right through to the forefront of current knowledge. It will provide an excellent preparation for a variety of careers, both subject-related and generic.

You'll be studying in the stimulating environment of a research-oriented department, and will graduate well-qualified for a fulfilling career in a range of expanding fields.
Course Content : In your first year, you will take our Core Biology module, which is compulsory for all Life Sciences students. Through this module you will develop various essential study skills and acquire laboratory experience, as well as studying a range of Biology topics. Other modules in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will provide a foundation of knowledge for the two subject areas of this degree. You will also learn about data interpretation and introductory statistical analysis in the Biomeasurement module.
In your second and third years, your studies become more specialised and you will take modules specific to Genetic and Medical Biology, including Principles of Genetics and Principles of Pathology. During your final year, you will carry out a laboratory-based research project. Modules associated with this degree are listed below;
Year one core modules: - Biomeasurement - Core Biology - Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - Foundations of Cell Biology - Human Anatomy and Physiology I - Human Anatomy and Physiology II - General Microbiology
Year two core modules: - Preparation for Research - Practical Biology - Principles of Genetics - Cell and Molecular Structure and Function - Parasitology - Principles of Pathology - Metabolism and Its Control - The Physiology of Organ Systems - DNA and Gene Manipulation - Diagnostic Techniques in Pathology
Year three core modules: - Project - Bacterial Molecular Genetics - Human Pathology - Medical Genetics - Clinical Immunology - Microbial Pathogenicity - Molecular Cell Biology - Special Topics in Cell and Molecular
Associated careers : This degree will prepare you for a career in a wide range of fields including the pharmaceutical industry and the health service. Many graduates also go on to further study.
Assessment : A wide variety of assessments methods are used, both formative (e.g. computer based exercises, non-assessed presentations, class exercises etc) and summative (e.g. unseen and seen examinations, computer-based assessments, essays, practical reports, assessed seminar presentations, review and assessment of scientific papers, laboratory skills, project report etc.
Profesional recognition : You will be entitled to apply for student membership of the Institute of Biology. After working as a biologist for two years, graduates may apply for full membership and Chartered Biologist status.
Special features : Emphasis of course is on development of laboratory and practical skills, newly equipped laboratories a major strength. Opportunities to do project work with external organisations e.g. Human Genome Project
Links with industry : Life Science staff have useful links with The Institute of Biology (London), British Antarctic Survey (Cambridge), Human Genome Project (Cambridge) as well as a range of local employers including: Addenbrooke?s Hospital and Glaxosmithkline.
