1. INTRODUCTION TO MACHINE TOOLS
Classification of machining processes - Kinematic arrangement of different types of machine tools - Work holding and Tool holding devices of different types of machine tools.

2. MACHINE TOOL COMPONENTS AND DESIGN
Bed and Column – types-materials –design principles - Slide ways - types - materials –design principles - Antifriction ways – design calculations - Machine tool structures - design fundamentals-function and requirement of machine tool structure – various profiles of machine tool structure-static and dynamic stiffness- basic design procedure-materials for machine tool structures - Drive system - various types - Advantages and Disadvantages.

3. CONSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES OF CNC MACHINES
Different types of CNC machines - Constructional features: spindle and axes feed drives – slide ways – linear motion guide ways –ball screw – accessories. Feed back devices: encoders – resolvers – tachometers –Digital read outs- laser interferometer. Tooling for CNC: – classification of tooling systems –tool holders - Preset and qualified tools - work holding devices – Fixtures. Control systems - closed loop – open loop – point-to-point - contour – interpolators.

4. PART PROGRAMMING OF CNC MACHINES
Manual part programming – preparatory functions - miscellaneous functions - canned cycles – Absolute and Incremental programming – subroutines – examples of Manual part programming. Computer Aided part programming – APT programming –Generation of GM codes from CAD model – examples of APT programming.
5. RECENT ADVANCES
Computer numerical control –DNC – Combined DNC/CNC – Adaptive control of machining system Computer Aided Manufacturing – elements and functions - Computer Aided process planning: – planning function –process planning software – Methods of CAPP – variant – generative –examples of types of process planning systems - Internet based manufacturing.
