Industrial automation systems design and embedded systems design are good higher-study options for meritorious B.Tech holders in Electronics and Communication Engineering. There is much scope for automation engineers. Stiff competition, evolution of higher quality standards and growing concern for safety and the environment have led to the adoption of state-of-the-art Automation Techniques. The recent trend of merging control systems associated with both factory and process automation demands knowledge of diverse fields. Automation applications span plant automation, discrete and batch process control, embedded machine control and manufacturing production line automation.

Industrial automation applications include automation of time critical systems that demand precise real-time reading and control. Qualified automation engineers are needed to design appropriate automation systems. But, one needs to have knowledge of diversified areas such as PC/PLC-based controls, instrumentation, H/W, S/W, networking, industrial AC drives, machine vision, SCADA/ HMI, high-speed data acquisition; RTOS, etc, to become a successful automation engineer.

DOEACC courses

DOEACC, Calicut Centre, is a prominent institute, offering a six-month (22 weeks) PG Diploma in Industrial Automation System Design. This course has been framed taking into account the present manpower requirement of industries. Major course modules include industrial field instruments, industrial AC drives, PC-based systems for industrial automation, PLC& PID Controllers, industrial data communication, robotics and machine vision, real-time high-speed data acquisition and control. The course also includes 10 weeks' industry-oriented project work. Students will be given the choice of selecting the projects. For more details visit the website www.cedtic.com. The centre also conducts a PG Diploma in Embedded System Design ED500, which is job-oriented. ME/M.Tech./BE/B.Tech. students in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation, Computer Sciences and Engineering and M.Sc. Electronics students are eligible for admission to this course. Course modules include embedded programming in `C', system design using - 8 bit, micro-controllers, advanced micro-controllers, digital signal processors; embedded software and RT Linux, RTOS programming using VX Works, Elective (Data Communication and Wireless Systems or Systems design using FPGAS); embedded product design and project work.

The centre also conducts an M.Tech course in Embedded Systems. The objective of the course is to mould fresh electronics engineers and to upgrade working engineers into high-calibre embedded systems engineers. This course offers a range of topics of relevance to industry and trains students for industries engaged in embedded system development.

C-DAC courses

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) offers a diploma course in embedded systems design - a five-month-full time course, which is designed with equal emphasis on hardware and software to meet these specific needs of the embedded/electronics industry. The course modules cover programming concepts, real-time operating systems, embedded systems programming, micro-controllers and interfacing digital signal processing, embedded communication systems, project and a seminar. Those who have obtained an Engineering degree in electronics / electrical/ electronics and communication/electronics and instrumentation/computer science and engineering/computer engineering/information technology/M.Sc Electronics with consistent academic record from school level to final degree are eligible for admission. Selection will be based on a national-level common entrance test to evaluate the applicant's aptitude and technical knowledge. This course will be available at C-DAC Hyderabad and some other centres. C-DAC also conducts a Diploma in System Software Development course to meet industry needs. This five-month full-time course covers the modules - assembly and Advanced C / C++ programming, advanced operating systems, computer networking, Windows programming and drives development, Linux system programming and drives development, grid Computing, software process management, industry relevant project and a seminar. Meritorious engineering graduates in electronics/electronics and communication/computer science and engineering/information technology and MCA/M.Sc. M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies, M.S.R. Nagar, Bangalore - 560054 (www.msrsas.org) conducts advanced certificate full-time training programmes of six months' duration for fresh engineering graduates in the following areas - applied digital signal processing; automobile electronics; embedded system design; M-CAD; mobile and wireless communication, VLSI system design. The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), an autonomous body under the Ministry of HRD, conducts a Post Graduate Diploma course in Industrial Engineering. This two-year programme grooms industrial engineers as technology management experts for both the manufacturing and service sectors. The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore - 560100 (www.iiitb.ac.in) , offers four-semester postgraduate, including foundation courses, advanced courses, business courses and soft-skill courses. Foundation courses cover computer architecture, object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, databases, computer networking, digital communication, probability and statistics. Advanced courses cover software engineering, embedded systems, VLSI, component technology, software architecture, mobile computing, cryptography, advanced operating systems, advanced networking, dynamics of the IT industry, enterprise systems, e-commerce, IT in automotives and industrial informatics.

Business courses cover accounting and finance, strategy and marketing for IT. Soft-skill courses cover communication, team building, and leadership.

Admission is based on an entrance test. In Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram is a test centre. A first class degree in BE/B.Tech./M.Sc./ MCA is the minimum qualification.
