Animation is a fast-emerging career field with the advancement of visual media such as television, cinema, multimedia and so on.

To become an animator one should undergo intensive training in 2D or 3D animation. Aspirants must have excellent creative and artistic abilities such as flair for drawing, sketching or caricaturing. Having a good sense of humour and power of observation will be an added advantage. Even Plus Two holders and graduates will not find it hard to do animation courses.

Fine arts graduates who specialise in animation can have a better career in this field. One should achieve proficiency in handling current animation and multimedia software.

Courses

In Kerala, short-term training facilities are available at Keltron Animation Campus (Keltron IT Education Centre), Spencer Junction, Thiruvananthapuram. Diploma courses in animation and visual effect, game development and certificate course in advanced 3D animation, etc, are offered here. Website: www.keltronanimation.com

Keltron Animation Campus in Kozhikode (Phone: 0495-2721772, 3253660) offers a professional diploma course in Animation, Vfx and multimedia. Course module includes art and fundamentals, drawing for animation, graphic design, 2D animation, 3D modelling and animation, editing and visual effects etc. Duration: 14 months. Those who have passed plus two/equivalent examination are eligible for admission.

Keltron IT Education Centre, Kollam, offers a diploma course in 2D animation. Duration: 6 months. Entry qualification is three-year diploma or Plus Two pass and above. Website: www.keltron.org

The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) Thiruvallom, Thiruvananthapuram - 695 027, occasionally offers training facilities for animation. Website: www.c-dit.org

St. Joseph College of Communication, affiliated to MG University, Changanassery, Kurisummoodu PO, Kerala - 686104, website: www.sjcc.in, offers a BA Animation and Graphic Designing Course, aimed at grooming students for a creative career in the fields of animation films, feature films, internet and news media, product design, architecture and interior design, automobile modelling, game design and entertainment production. Entry qualification is pass in Plus Two. Selection is through an aptitude test and interview. An MA Cinema and Television course is also offered here for graduates.

Amrita School of Arts and Science, Brahmasthanam, Edappally North P.O, Kochi - 682 024, conducts a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) course in Visual Media with specialisation in film and television; graphic arts and animation; communicative journalism. Graduates in any subject with 50 per cent marks are eligible for admission. Website: www.amrita.edu

DC Media School, Kinfra Film and Video Park, Kazhakkuttom, Thiruvananthapuram - 695 585 conducts a PG Diploma course in Graphics and Animation Design covering character drawing, cell animation, basic film techniques, modelling, claymation, 2D and 3D animation, non-linear editing, sound and music scoring, etc. Graduates in any discipline are eligible for admission. BFA students will be given preference. Admission is based on a selection test and interview. Website: www.dcsmatmediaschool.com

The National Institute of Design (NID), Pandi, Ahmedabad, under the Government of India, provides excellent study facilities for graphic design, animation film design, film and video communication, etc. Meritorious Plus Two holders can join the four-year Graduate Diploma Programme in Design and opt for specialisation. Total number of seats is 60.

A Postgraduate Diploma programme in Design with communications design as one of the specialisations is also offered here. Communication design consists of graphic design, animation film design, film and video communication. Selection is based on an all-India-level entrance test and interview. Website: www.nid.edu

The Film and Television Institute of India, Pune - 411 004, website: www.ftiindia.com; conducts a one-and-half-year certificate course in animation and computer graphics for Plus Two students, Fine arts diploma holders will be given preference.

The Birla Institute of Technology (Deemed University), Mesra, Ranchi - 835 215, website: www.bitmesra.ac.in, offers B.Sc. Animation and Multimedia courses at its Jaipur and Noida centres.

Toonz - webel Academy, Salt lake, Kolkata - 700 091, conducts a one-year diploma course in 2D and 3D animations.

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Mumbai, www.iitb.ac.in, and Guwahati, www.iitg.ernet.in, offer Master of Design programmes for B.Tech. holders.

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) centres in Pune and Mohali also provide training facilities in animation. C-DAC, Mohali - 160071 (Chandigarh), offers PG Diploma in Animation and Multimedia for graduates. Course modules cover 3D modelling and character animation, 2D cartoon animation, compositing and special effects, multimedia authoring and web designing, digital audio and video editing, entrepreneurship development and project work. Animation is also taught as a paper in BFA courses. Therefore, graduates in fine arts get preference for admission in animation.

Many private institutes too offer animation courses of different kinds.

Job prospects

Qualified animators will have excellent opportunities. Besides film and television industry, the fields of cartoon, gaming companies, digital studios and companies, which do animation work for global studios, education/academic robotics, fashion and research, will offer openings. Highly qualified animators with good communication skills and language proficiency would have better opportunities in countries such as Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, the U.K. and Italy.
