Integrated Ph.D

The IISc. offers exciting opportunities to B.Sc. holders with a keen sense of scientific inquiry for pursuing advanced research in the frontier areas of chemical, biological, physical and mathematical sciences leading to Ph.D.

Students entering this programme on an average save nearly one year, compared to those who go for a two-year master's degree programme elsewhere and then join the institute for Ph.D. programme. Each year, the IISc. admits 12 students to the integrated Ph.D. programme in the chemical science stream. The programme consisting of flexible course work and internship - type laboratory training, enables the students to acquire basic experimental skills and familiarise themselves with advanced techniques of research and to take up a research project to demonstrate attainment of a high degree of scientific ability followed by advanced research leading to a Ph.D. thesis on a specific topic.

Entry qualification

The minimum requirement for admission is a first class B.Sc. degree with chemistry as one of the main subjects with mathematics at Plus Two level (SC/ST students need only pass marks). Those in the final year of their qualifying examination and awaiting results are also eligible and they should have qualified by the time of joining of the programme.

Selection is based on the performance in the all-India level entrance test and interview. In Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram will be a test centre.

This is a five-year integrated programme leading to Ph.D. The value of the monthly scholarship for the programme is Rs.3,000 for the first two years and Rs.8,000 to Rs.9,000 from third year onwards. Scholarships are initially awarded for a period of one year and are renewable subject to satisfactory academic performance.

The IISc. admission notification can be expected during January every year and the academic session commences in August. For more details visit www.IIScernet.in

Satyendra Nath Bose National centre for Basic Sciences, Salt Lake, Kolkata - 700 098, provides a post-B.Sc. Integrated Ph.D. programme in Chemical Sciences. Intake: 10. For more details visit www.bose.res.in , www.lacs.res.in

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai - 400 005 also provides research opportunities for exceptionally talented and motivated students in chemistry. Website: www.tifr.res.in.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore - 560 064 (www.jncasr.ac.in) offers opportunities for bright and motivated students to conduct research leading to an Integrated Ph.D. in Chemistry. Meritorious Chemistry graduates are eligible for admission.

M.Sc. at IITs

The seven IITs conduct a Joint Admission Test (JAM) for M.Sc. programmes in different disciplines, including chemistry. The admissions under JAM are open to all Indian nationals. IIT Madras (35 seats), Bombay (25), Delhi ( 35), Guwahati (25), Kanpur (27), Kharagpur (30), Roorkee (36) offer the M.Sc. Chemistry programme.

Minimum eligibility for admission to this two-year four-semester programme is a bachelor's degree with chemistry as a subject for three years/six semesters and mathematics at the Plus Two level.

IIT Bombay, Madras and Kharagpur require only a pass in B.Sc. IIT Delhi requires B.Sc. first class (5 per cent relaxation for SC/ST/PH students) and IITs at Guwahati and Kanpur require 55 per cent marks for B.Sc. (50 per cent for SC/ST students). IIT Roorkee requires a first class B.Sc. degree (55 per cent for SC/ST students. Students appearing for the final year degree examination are also eligible to write the JAM.

The test paper for chemistry will be of objective-cum-subjective type (30 per cent objective type and 70 per cent subjective type questions).

IIT Madras offers a two-year M.Sc. programme in Chemistry. The common core courses in M.Sc. programme are offered during the first three semesters. The Chemistry Department offers a computational chemistry programme that familiarises the students with software applications related to chemistry. In the second year, the students will do research in the areas of their choice. The project will prepare the students to take up a Ph.D. programme or jobs in sophisticated high-tech laboratories.

JAM test centres under the IIT Madras zone include Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Chennai, Tiruchirappalli and Bangalore. For more details visit www.iitm.ac.in, www.iitd.ac.in/jam.

Contact address: IIT Madras, Chennai - 600 036; IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai - 400 076; IIT Delhi, Hauzkhas, New Delhi - 110 016; IIT Guwahati, Guwahati - 781 039; IIT Kanpur, Kanpur - 208 016; IIT Kharagpur, Kharagpur - 721 302; IIT Roorkee, Roorkee - 247 667.

JAM notification can be expected during November/December every year. Those who successfully complete the M.Sc. programme with good marks (55 per cent and above) can go for Ph.D. programmes. Final year M.Sc. students can appear for UGC - CSIR JRF/lectureship examination and GATE. Those who qualify these examinations are eligible for research with fellowship/lecturers' posts in colleges/universities.

Specialisation

Several colleges and universities offer chemistry as general subject at the postgraduate level and at the same time chemistry encompasses several specialisations or subdivisions such as analytical, organic, inorganic, industrial, applied, pharmaceutical, polymer, textile, etc. and these specialised subjects are being offered by some universities/colleges in India.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology offers M.Sc. Applied Chemistry/Hydrochemistry courses. B.Sc. holders with chemistry/polymer chemistry/environmental chemistry/industrial chemistry/petrochemicals as the main subject and with mathematics as one of the subsidiary subjects and 55 per cent marks in the main subjects are eligible for admission to M.Sc. Applied Chemistry. Graduates in chemistry with 55 per cent marks are eligible for admission to the M.Sc. Hydrochemistry course. M.Phil. and Ph.D. study is also possible here.
