Those who wish to become dieticians or nutritionists should complete their study in dietetics and nutrition/ home science/ food science technology course at the graduate/ postgraduate levels. In order to ensure a better position, they may even go for Ph.D. in the relevant field.
One can specialise in food science and nutrition in the M.Sc. Home science Course. Postgraduate diploma courses in nutrition and dietetics are available for graduates.
The Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore - 570 020, affiliated to university of Mysore, offers a two year M.Sc. Food Technology course. Science graduates with chemistry or biochemistry as one of the subjects and at least 55 per cent marks in the optional subjects are eligible for admission. Applicants should have studied mathematics either at the Plus Two or degree level. Selection is based on an entrance/aptitude test. Website: www.cftri.com.
The Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies, Tiruvalla - 689 101 (Ph: 0469 - 2733534) (www.macfast.org) , conducts food science and technology courses. Graduates with 55 per cent aggregate marks in chemistry, biochemistry, food science and technology, dairy technology, polymer chemistry, home science (with auxiliary chemistry), etc. are eligible for admission. A PG Diploma course in food science and technology is also being offered here for science/engineering graduates.

Career prospects
Nutrition is the science of food and its effects on human and animal life, health and disease. Dieticians need to be well-versed in dietetics. Nutritionists and dieticians plan nutrition programmes. They are responsible for promoting sound eating habits through education and research; they are mainly concerned with food and health. They know about food production and processing, psychological factors influencing food choice, digestion and its effects on nutritional aspects. Dieticians advise and plan special diets for diabetics and those suffering from other diseases.
Job opportunities for dieticians and nutritionists are in multi-speciality hospitals, catering departments of star hotels, baby food manufacturing companies, food research institutes and large catering organisations.
The health and hospitality industry requires the services of nutritionists and dieticians.
Other options
Biotechnology and bioinformatics are other suitable higher-study options.
Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli - 620 024, offers M.Sc. Biotechnology. Entry qualification includes B.Sc. Food and Nutrition.
Jawaharlal Nehru University conducts combined biotechnology entrance examination every year for admission to M.Sc. Biotechnology of various participating universities. Entry qualification is Bachelor's degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in physical, biological, agricultural, veterinary, fishery sciences, pharmacy, engineering/technology etc.
Amrita School of Applied Sciences, Klappana, Kollam - 690 525, conducts M.Sc. Bioinformatics course. Entry qualification is graduation in any discipline of science, including mathematics, engineering or medicine (Background in mathematics or computer science preferred). M.Sc. Biotechnology course is also available here. Graduates in any discipline of science are eligible for admission. (Background in biology is preferred.)
