Industrial engineering is an emerging discipline that deals with the design, development, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of human knowledge, equipment, energy, material and processes needed for an industry. Industrial engineers use the principles and methods of engineering analysis to make processes more efficient and to make products easier to manufacture by retaining quality and thereby increasing productivity.
They also work to eliminate wastage of time, money, materials, energy and other resources. Industrial engineers integrate people, technology and information to improve efficiency. Industrial engineering is a combination of mechanical engineering and management.
B.Tech. course
At the B.Tech. level, the subjects covered include mechanical engineering, project management, human aspects of management, decision modelling and operations research. Industrial management as a specialisation is also available.
The main objective of the course is to train students to equip them for a middle-level management profession in the industrial field. An M.Tech. level programme in industrial engineering is equivalent to an MBA.
At IITs
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are the prominent institutes offering four-year B.Tech. programmes in Industrial Engineering.
IIT Kharagpur (www.iitkgp.ernet.in/jee) conducts this course. At the same time IIT Delhi (www.iitd.ac.in) and IIT Roorkee (www.iitr.ac.in/jee) offer a four-year B.Tech. course in Production and Industrial Engineering.
IIT Kharagpur also conducts an M.Tech five-year dual degree programme in Industrial Engineering (with M.Tech. Industrial Engineering and Management) and Manufacturing Science and Engineering (with M.Tech Industrial Engineering and Management).
Admissions to the above programmes are through the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Those who have passed or are going to appear for the Plus Two final year/equivalent examination with physics, mathematics and chemistry as subjects are eligible to write the JEE. Applicants must secure 60 per cent marks in aggregate in the qualifying examinations. (SC/ST/ Physically challenged students require only 55 per cent marks.)
Bright students can also take up mechanical engineering for B.Tech. and later turn to MBA / management postgraduate programmes in leading institutes such as IIMS, XLRI, XIMB, BIM etc. It is a good option to write the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in the final/pre-final year of B.Tech. and qualify to pursue M.Tech in Industrial Engineering with a scholarship.
M.Tech. course
Government Engineering College, Thiruvananthapuram (Department of Mechanical Engineering) conducts M.Tech. in Industrial Engineering. There are five seats for general students and two seats for SC / ST. Selection is based on GATE score.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) (Deemed University), Tiruchirappalli - 620 015, conducts M.Tech. Industrial Engineering through its Production Engineering Department. BE/B.Tech degree holders with 60 per cent marks in industrial/production / mechanical engineering are eligible for admission. Selection is based on all-India level entrance test conducted by the institute or the GATE score (www.nitt.edu) .
NIT-Calicut offers M.Tech. Mechanical Engineering with industrial engineering and management, thermal sciences, manufacturing technology, energy management, materials science and technology as specialisations. Web site: www.nitc.ac.in.
IIT Kharagpur offers a two-year four-semester M.Tech. programme in Industrial Engineering and Management (www.iitkgp.ernet.in/mtech) while IIT Kanpur conducts M.Tech. and Ph.D. in Industrial and Management Engineering (www.iitk.ac.in)
The Amrita School of Engineering (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Ettimadai P.O, Coimbatore - 641 105 (www.amrita.edu) , offers an M.Tech. in Engineering Design and Manufacturing Engineering. BE/B.Tech. holders in Industrial Engineering with 60 per cent marks are eligible for admission. Preference will be given to applicants with GATE scores.
The National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology (affiliated to Ranchi University), Halia, Ranchi - 834 003, conducts M.Tech in Manufacturing Engineering. B.Tech. holders in Industrial Engineering with valid GATE scores are eligible for admission.
PSG College of Technology, Peelamedu, Coimbatore - 641 004 (affiliated to Anna University), offers ME/M.Tech. Mechanical with specialisation in industrial engineering, computer integrated manufacturing, engineering Design. Web site: www.psgtech.edu.
Sona College of Technology (affiliated to Anna University) Salem, (www.sonatech.ac.in) conducts ME courses in thermal engineering, computer integrated manufacturing, product design and development. Industrial engineering graduates are also eligible for admission.
The National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai - 400 087, (www.nitie.edu) offers a PG Diploma in Industrial Engineering. This two- year programme trains industrial engineers as technology management experts for both the manufacturing and service sectors. GATE qualified first class engineering/technology graduates in any branch are eligible for admission. Admission is based on a group discussion and interview with appropriate weightage being given to the GATE score. Fellow/doctoral programmes are also offered here.
Career prospects
Those who have higher qualifications and adequate managerial experience can attain top positions in the industrial/management field with an attractive remuneration and incentives. Industrial Engineers can also work as plant engineers, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, process engineers and industrial managers in different industries, management and service sector in the middle management cadre. Most of the opportunities are in the private sector.
The Union Public Service Commission holds Engineering Services Examinations every year for appointments to various Central services. Bachelor's degree holders in engineering/technology are eligible to appear for the examination.
