The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi, functioning under the Union Ministry of Textiles is a prominent institute providing higher-study facilities in fashion technology and fashion management.

The NIFT offers two-year PG programmes in fashion technology. Entry qualification is BE/B.Tech. in Textiles/Apparel /Mechanical/ Industry/ Production/ Electronics/ Computer Science/ Information Technology.

Another PG programme is in fashion management. Duration is two years. Graduates in any discipline or diploma holders in accessory / fashion design from NIFT are eligible for admission.

Selection to these programmes is based on entrance tests, situation test, group discussion and interview. In Kerala, Kochi is the only test centre. The admission notification can be expected during October/November every year. Besides New Delhi, NIFT centres are in Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

The PG programme in fashion management is offered at the centres in New Delhi, Bangalore, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The intake capacity is 30 seats each. This programme focuses on change and innovation management, IT, integrated marketing, winning strategies, e-business, Internet and other converging technologies, export supply chain management and retail technologies.

PG programme in fashion technology is available at NIFT New Delhi only. Intake capacity is 30 seats. This programme strives to train students in functional specialities and imparts skills that will enable them to contribute significantly to the fashion technology or related industry. Students also get a better understanding of the garment business.

This programme builds a sound technical knowledge base for the students and acquaints them with the analysis tools for effective managerial decision-making. Semester fee Rs.28,500. More details can be obtained from the NIFT website www.niftindia.com.

The National Institute of Design (NID), Paldi, Ahmedabad, conducts two-and-a-half years' postgraduate diploma programmes in textile design, apparel design and merchandising and lifestyle accessory design.

Entry qualification for textile design is BFA, Applied Arts, Textile / Handloom Technology, Textile/ Knitwear/ Fashion Design/ Home Science with Textile and Clothing.

For apparel design and merchandising the entry qualification is BFA, Applied Arts, Textile/ Knitwear /Fashion Design or graduates in merchandising or any other subjects with proven proficiency in drawing and garment construction/ presentation.

For lifestyle accessory design, the required qualification is BFA, Applied Arts, Design, B.Arch., Interior Design, Accessory Design and relevant disciplines in technology/engineering.

Selection is through national-level admission test. In Kerala, Kochi will be a test centre. Admission notification can be expected during September/October every year. The admission test may conducted during January.

Private sector

In the private sector, Pearl Academy of Fashion in Delhi, Jaipur and Chennai offers two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Fashion Merchandising, Garment manufacturing, Textile Design (Home Fashion), Fashion Retail, Fashion Design (Indian wear).

The academy, established in 1993, is an industry-initiated institute that imparts practical and job-oriented programmes to shape future careers for the fashion industry.

Pearl Academy of Fashion, Chennai branch, 82, Sterling Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai - 34, offers two-year PG Diploma programmes in Fashion Merchandising; Garment Manufacturing; Textile Design (Home Fashion) for graduates in any discipline.

The fashion merchandising course aims to train students comprehensively in theories, concepts, practical skills and techniques to enable them to take up merchandising-related jobs in the fashion industry. After successful completion, one can become a merchandiser or product developer.

Since the garment industry is booming in India, the demand for manufacturing mangers is very high. Hence, the PG diploma course in garment manufacturing assumes much importance. It imparts basic concepts and knowledge in core technical subjects, business and allied studies related to garment manufacturing. Those who successfully complete this programme are eligible to become production managers.

The entry qualification for PG Diploma in Textile Design (Home fashion) is graduation in textile technology / engineering, home science with textiles and clothing and textile/fashion design merchandising. It aims to prepare professionals for the textile industry with creative, technical, product development capabilities and merchandising exposure.

On successful completion, students will have career prospects as home furnishing and fabric designers, design co-ordinators, mangers, home textile merchandisers etc. in the relevant fields.

Admission to PG Diploma in Fashion Design, (India wear) is open to graduates in any disciplines. This programme correlates design and technology with practices in the Indian style fashion industry. More details can be collected from the website www.pearlacademy.com.

The Army Institute of Fashion and Design (A unit of Army welfare Education Society), Bangalore - 560 016, conducts a two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Fashion Technology, Apparel Merchandising and Logistics Management and MBA two-year dual degree programme in association with IIMM. Any graduate is eligible for admission. Selection is based on an admission test. This institute is affiliated to Bangalore University (www.aifdonline.com) . Phone 080 - 57686558, 25617309.

`VOGUE' Institute of Fashion Technology Bangalore - 25 (Phone: 080 - 25583166) offers PG Diploma in Fashion Retail and Merchandise Management. This institute is affiliated to Bangalore University. Websit: ww.voguefashioninstitute.com.

The School of Fashion Technology, Pune, offers PG programmes in Apparel production and Merchandising Management (one-and-a-half years) and Fashion Design & Clothing Technology (two years). Job prospects

Majority of the job opportunities are in the private sector in the fashion/related industries, especially in the area of designing, merchandising, etc. Also one could work as a freelance design consultant for various fashion houses.
