Chemical Engineering is an amalgam of chemistry and engineering for the production of chemicals and related equipments. The design and development of instruments needed for the chemical industry and their applications, developing chemical processing and so on are some of the primary duties of a chemical engineer.

Mathematical ability, imagination, capacity to draw inferences from observational and experimental data and logical reasoning are useful skills to succeed in this branch of engineering.

Prominent institutes

Frontline institutions offering high quality B.Tech-level education in chemical engineering are the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee and the Institute of Technology under Banaras Hindu University. Duration is four years.

Integrated M.Tech. dual degree

Besides these courses, five-year integrated M.Tech. Dual Degree Programmes in Chemical Engineering are also being offered by the IITs at Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras. IIT Delhi also offers chemical engineering with M.Tech. in Computer Applications in Chemical Engineering; Chemical Engineering with M.Tech. in Process Engineering and Design Programmes. IIT Roorkee conducts chemical Engineering with M.Tech. in Hydro Carbon Engineering and IIT Bombay offers chemical engineering with M.Tech. in Process Systems Design and Engineering Programmes. Admission to all the above programmes is based on the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the IIT. In Kerala, Kochi, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram will be the test centres.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur is ranked among the nation's top schools in Chemical Engineering and is endowed with a vibrant graduate programme. About 45 students graduate every year in the B.Tech. and 40 in the five-year Integrated M.Tech Dual Degree Programme in Chemical Engineering. Integrated Dual Degree Programmes enable the students to earn both a B.Tech. and M.Tech. degree in five years.
