Hi Friends ...
In ambit of World Environment Day June, 5, 2008 ... I am sharing this with you

What is a Carbon Footprint?

Footprints generally offer clues about from where we came from and where we're headed. Their impressions tell us something about the animals that leave them. But while actual footprints offer details on size, weight and speed, carbon footprints measure how much carbon dioxide (CO2) we produce just by going about our daily lives. A drive to work, a flip of a light switch and a flight out of town all rely on the combustion of fossil fuels like oil, coal and gas which in turn emit greenhouse gases like CO2 that contribute to global warming

Primary and Secondary Footprint:

1. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation

2. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use - those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown.

Tips to reduce your Carbon Footprint:
1. Change your light bulbs to long lasting Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs
2. Keep your windows closed when your A/C or heating system is working
3. Switch your PC or TV off instead of standby.
4. Wash fewer times and bigger loads. Use the air, the sun to dry your laundry. Did you know that you can probably reduce the CO2s created by your laundry by some 90%.
5. Work from home , less commuting, less pollution, less expenses
6. Choose public transport
7. Go Online! Read news online, pay online. Less paper usage saves trees and lots of energy. Paper production is extremely energy intensive!
8. Look for energy efficient household machines.
9. Get your own shopping bag, stop the plastic bag frenzy and shop local.
