Microwaves work mainly by agitating, or shaking the molecules of water with in the food. A molecule that shakes more has more heat energy-that is, it gets hotter. The heat energy is transferred from each water molecule to the other molecule around it.

The food cooks inside, instead of from the outside-in, like in a normal oven. The process also continuous for a while after the microwaves is switched off. So food from a microwave oven is left to “stand” for a while after wards to finish cooking.
