Top 10 Resume Mistakes to Avoid
Here are a list of things that you should avoid in your resume before applying for an interview.
Outdated Format
Avoid using the old block style format with 'Objective' and 'Education' on the top. It is more effective to present a summary of your skills instead.
Typos
Typos in resumes is a major turn-off for employers or consultants. Your resume will end in somebody's trash bin if you do not avoid typos.
Lengthy Descriptions
You just have a 15 second window to impress the employer. Resumes with lengthy long winding description are rarely read. Use bullet points instead of a paragraph style.
Focus on responsibilities than achievements
This is a common mistake made by many. Responsibilities can be assigned to anybody. What matters most is what you achieved. Focus more on your achievements rather than duties in your resume.
Lack of Specifics
Do not give vague references to your achievements. Instead substantiate it with facts and figures.
Vague Objective
Do not give a generalized vague objective for your resume. This will confuse your employer. Be very specific about the role and the industry that you wish to apply for.
Your Family History
The employer doesn't want to read your family history. Keep your personal details to the minimum in the resume.
Multiple Fonts & Colors
Avoid multiple fonts and colors in your resume. It not only looks unprofessional but also distracts the reader.
Lengthy Resumes
Employers spend about 20 seconds reading your resume. They do not have time to read resumes that are more than 3 - 4 pages.
Meaningless Acronyms
Avoid using acronyms while mentioning Job Titles, Institution Name & Company name. It is better to use the full name to avoid confusion.
